Partial Re-roofing... Slates damp on underside, and questions RE ventilation

That's all really helpful to know, many thanks. A fair few are now off the roof for the repair work. Some still ring nicely when tapped with a knuckle, does that mean they might be better than they look at first glance? I've read lots that if they ring they are good, but what if they ring yet...

Partial Re-roofing... Slates damp on underside, and questions RE ventilation

Many thanks for the replies. @clogs - Yes, I will be adding ventilation. I'll be putting in a continuous ventilation at both the soffits and the ridge. That was always the plan but was more for the between sarking underside and insulation topside air gap. For the gap between the sarking...

Partial Re-roofing... Slates damp on underside, and questions RE ventilation

@Spectric - many thanks for the reply. Interesting, that makes sense although until now I always thoughts the vertical counterbattens were to give the water a path into the gutter rather than ventilation. With your set up, where does the ventilation come from - do you have it at the eaves and...

Hot Dipped vs Zinc Coated Galvanised Nails - which for roofing?

That's interesting and contrary to everything I've read... The usual spin on things is that the movement of the slates wheres off the galvanisation and creates a weak point on the nail, which corrodes and leads to slipped slates etc. But not in your experience?

Partial Re-roofing... Slates damp on underside, and questions RE ventilation

Hi all I think there are a few roofers and folks with roofing experience here? Wondered if anyone could share their thoughts if so please? Background first - the room has a vaulted ceiling (so no loft), is not currently heated, and is only used by one person. There's no kitchen. I've...

Hot Dipped vs Zinc Coated Galvanised Nails - which for roofing?

Thanks for all the great replies and help, some really interesting stuff to consider. I'll definitely use hot dipped for the battens, and you've given me food for thought as to what to use elsewhere. With regards SS screws, I don't want to complicate things but are there different grades? Or...

Hot Dipped vs Zinc Coated Galvanised Nails - which for roofing?

Many thanks for the helpful replies... I do have a tendency to! But interesting how other responses say that hot dipped are far superior, so I'm glad I asked. It does leave me wondering though... If hot dipped are so much better, why do people choose to use (and roofing stores choose to...

Hot Dipped vs Zinc Coated Galvanised Nails - which for roofing?

I'm not sure if I'm overthinking this... I was under the impression hot dipped galvanised is far superior, and best for any outdoor use... I need to do some roof repairs and bought a pack of round wire nails made by Samac, for fixing sarking boards and battens to rafters. The Samac nails...

    18v tool brand choice

Can't remember what the Ryobis had, but yes I think you're probably right. So ignore me! Although even without the comparison I'm still very impressed and pleased with the DeWalt battery life, even with nothing to compare them too.

    18v tool brand choice

Interested to hear more about this. How do you tell the two levels apart? To the OP - I bought the DeWalt impact driver and combi drill. I've been really pleased with them, but then have nothing to compare them to other than an old pair of Ryobi 14.4Vs I had which became increasingly...

Parkside Angle Grinder Owners - can you help with a favour please?

First things first, whether the innuendo was intentional or not I'm going to leave others to make appropriate comment ;) Seriously though, that's good advice thanks. I intend to do it in short bursts so as not to overheat it. I'll de-dust during those breaks. Thanks for that. I've got...

Parkside Angle Grinder Owners - can you help with a favour please?

Good advice, thank you. In that case, Parkside definitely makes sense at £25. I'll get a couple, possible three, and can get a refund on any I don't use. Cheers Yeah, I can't beleive I didn't think that myself when I first thought it wasn't going to fit. I've got the discs now and whilst I...

How to detail soakers and flashing where a roof extends beyond the abutment wall (at lowest point)?

Hi all I'm going to be stripping slates and putting in new lead soakers with a flashing this week. It's a stone wall, so the flashing will be a straight diagonal line, parallel to the top of the roof. At the bottom, the roof extends beyond the wall by a few inches. What's the normal way to...

Parkside Angle Grinder Owners - can you help with a favour please?

That's what put me off it, the heaviness and unwieldyness of it. Although I've since been told that in other respects it could be more controllable. But irrespective, I need to start the job tomorrow so won't have time to source one now. Cheers

Parkside Angle Grinder Owners - can you help with a favour please?

Thanks for your reply. I'm definitely only aiming to get the corded version. Don't know if the cordless would have the same spindle on it, but in case it does, what would you say the maximum thickness of disc you can get on there would be? Anyone with a corded version who might be able...

Parkside Angle Grinder Owners - can you help with a favour please?

Hi folks I'm hoping to get a Parkside angle grinder on Thursday. I'll be chasing a stone wall ready for lead flashing, and plan to use either a 6.4mm or 8mm diamond mortar raking disc. The manual says the maximum disc thickness for cutting is 3mm (although says 6mm for a "Roughing disc")...

Using green wood for outdoor structures (like wood shelters)

Hi Well, the tree came down back in March but has sat unused since then (on pallets, and poorly covered). I need to get it out of the way soon-ish though, so am back to thinking how best to put it to use. Species... Rather stupidly I didn't take any photos specifically while it was standing...

Using green wood for outdoor structures (like wood shelters)

Hi Apologies if I've chosen the wrong sub-forum, I wasn't sure which was best. I have a larch in the garden which needs to come down... And I'm in the process of building several wood shelters (along with other outdoor projects I have on the to do list)... I was thinking to use the larch...
