anyone got 13 grand for a turntable?

It's been quite a few years now since I looked into it and read up on the subject, but I seem to remember concluding that unless a room is VERY big, and/or designed for acoustics from the ground up, having speakers close to the wall is actually to be preferred. A bit off topic though, so my...

anyone got 13 grand for a turntable?

I seem to remember seeing speaker cable for sale years ago at around £13,000 per metre. Free postage though, which takes the sting out of it ;) And even "kettle leads" will into the thousands. I was never convinced by any of it, but the nail in the coffin was seeing very expensive digital...

Buying and restoring old cross cut hand saws and two man saws (for firewood)

Just a quick one to say thanks for all the helpful replies, and especially to @thick_mike for the kind offer. I was born in Luton, but I'm in Wales now so a bit of a trek away! Thanks all the same though. I do have an uncle in Dunstable however, and at some point I'll hopefully visit him so...

Ash wood - suitability for outdoor projects (and what if it has dieback?)

Looks very interesting. And makes the plight of ash trees all the more sadder :(

Ash wood - suitability for outdoor projects (and what if it has dieback?)

Thanks for all the great and helpful replies. On the sum of it, methinks it will all end up in the wood stoves. I do have a few outdoor projects in mind. Not least of all wood shelters to house the firewood! So I wanted to check whether ash was suitable before sawing up the straight...

Ash wood - suitability for outdoor projects (and what if it has dieback?)

Hi all Recently had around 20 roadside ash trees taken down due to dieback, or perhaps just potential dieback with some. I've been reading about uses for the wood, and with a wood stove in the house (with possibly another one or two to come), firewood is an obvious choice. But we will also be...

Buying and restoring old cross cut hand saws and two man saws (for firewood)

Hi I have a lot of firewood to process (felled ash trees due to dieback), and with wood stoves in the house processing firewood will be ongoing. I've decided to try and do it all with hand tools. I'm reading a lot about Silkys and will likely end up with one or two of those. But I'm also...

Rowney Purified Linseed Oil... What have I gone and done?!?

Thanks for confirming @smackie And yes, that makes sense @MARK.B. Seems obvious now you've said it, but I hadn't thought of that at all! Cheers

Long term storage of ash for firewood - how best to go about it?

Hi all I know it's not really a woodwork question, but there's a lot of people who know a lot about wood around here, so I thought it would be a good place to ask... We had around 20-30 poor roadside ash taken down this week :( But every cloud and all that = more firewood :) In fact, I...

WD40 on concrete? Heat resistance? And for how long is it flammable?

Wow - your wood burner must have tall legs! What type do you have? Ours doesn't have any legs, so I think an ant wold have a hard time sleeping under it; let alone a dog!

Wood moisture meter for firewood logs - any recommendations?

Hi there Firstly, thanks for the great response - a pleasure to read :) And secondly, apologies for my delay in replying... Rather than try to explain it myself, I'll quote from one of the articles on the net I read: "The moisture content (MC) of a piece of wood is defined as the weight...

WD40 on concrete? Heat resistance? And for how long is it flammable?

The hearth requirements come from building regs. I'm quoting from memory - which is never a wise thing - but OI think it's along the lines of... If the stove is tested as being under 100C on the underside, then a 12mm hearth is sufficient. If not, a full constructional hearth (125mm thick...

Rowney Purified Linseed Oil... What have I gone and done?!?

Hi all So sorry for the radio silence. It's amazing how the days fly by! And with some dry weather of late I've been mostly outdoors and too knackered to do as much as I normally would once back in. Or too lazy maybe ;) What's odd is that the furniture seemed to be dry by the next day...

WD40 on concrete? Heat resistance? And for how long is it flammable?

Corrr, that's a good price, thanks for the heads up. However, I have a new-ish trade size can which I guess will last me at least a decade. That was part (a small part) of the reason to consider it... I was being "thrifty" ;)

WD40 on concrete? Heat resistance? And for how long is it flammable?

You're right, there is an ash box, and so the main firebox won't be in direct contact with the hearth. But I still presume it must get to over 100C as to meet the 12mm thick hearth requirement you have to add 100mm legs to the stove (even the 50mm legs AND ash box isn't enough to meet the...

WD40 on concrete? Heat resistance? And for how long is it flammable?

Many thanks for the replies :) We don't want to / can't raise the height of the hearth, so adding anything in that sense isn't an option... Interesting you should say that, as some stoves only need a 12mm hearth (usually stoves on legs of ??mm height) whilst others need a full monty...

WD40 on concrete? Heat resistance? And for how long is it flammable?

Hi all I am having a wood stove fitted soon and it will be sat on a concrete hearth. I want to enhance the colour of the concrete, and have read about people using WD40 to enhance the colour of various stones , slate, etc. Do you think it would be ok to use WD40 in this way? What kind of...

    Blocking mice?

Thanks for explaining. Totally agree. It worked for us and we found the entry point quite quickly. I guess for others it might be more difficult to find, but then isn't that half the "fun"?

    Blocking mice?

How come? Do they try to get home and fail? Or? We once considered humane traps but then figured that if you catch a mother and take it away the babies will die. I've no idea what the life cycle of mice is, for how long babies are reliant on their mothers, etc. So that might be complete...

Wood moisture meter for firewood logs - any recommendations?

Any thoughts on this? I can't thin of a better place to ask or a better bunch of people who understand wood so well. So I'd be really interested to hear some opinions RE moisture in wood and dry basis/wet basis meter differences. Or would it be better as a new thread? Cheers :)
