    Finishing an oak Mantlepiece

I have recently made an elm mantlepiece for a friend, I used danish oil to finish which has worked very well, they have had their fire going all winter now with no ill effects.

How best to seal an oak/ash table

PeterG's suggestion is a good one. I would avoid tung oil because it takes too long to dry but if you wanted a cheaper option than waxoil you could use danish oil (rustins or blackfriers). You may need up to eight or even ten applications to fill the grain, then just wire wool and wax. Regards...

    Mahogany Varnish & wax

After you have applied your last coat and it has fully cured you can charge up a pad of '0000' wire wool with a paste wax and rub this in, with the grain, you will de-nib and wax in one application, all you will then have to do is give it a good buff. Regards, Mrpercysnodgrass.
