    Quick question on ordering timber

I have used Timberline for many years and have had only first class timber and service, you could order from them with no fears. While on the subject Capital Crispin veneers have never disappointed either. Regards, mrpercysnodgrass

    Transparent hide glue?

Chrips, could you be a little more specific as to what your project is, photos perhaps. I only ask because you started asking about light coloured glue and now we are into coloured shellac which is a whole new subject. Regards, mrpercysnodgrass.

    Sanded garden furniture, what now?

Leaving your garden furniture to weather naturally is all well and good but you are forgetting that Brom is in Germany, if he did that he would have the "untidy garden police" pay him a visit. Unless the germans have chilled out since I was last there:)

    Sanded garden furniture, what now?

I'm not sure why you got black marks after rain, but teak oil should be fine for your furniture, just make sure you apply it when it is not going to rain. You can apply it by rag or brush, with your first coat, put plenty on, allow to stand for ten minutes (less if its hot) then wipe off the...

    Finish for waney-edged sycamore shelves?

My choice would be a microcrystalline wax, but you will still need to prime your timber first, shellac sanding sealer will do the job for you.

    Transparent hide glue?

Yes titanium oxide or you can also use flake White. You can get them from any polish supplier or art shop. Other useful ones to keep in the cupboard are, lamp black, brown umber, burnt turkey umber, yellow ochre, and raw umber. They mix well with shellac, and cellulose lacquers and water with...

    Transparent hide glue?

In my experience all hide glue dries to a brown or at the lightest a dark amber, however if you want to use it as a filler for ash you could add a little titanium powder to it or you may have to add more than one pigment to get the match you are after, I often add a little lamp black when I am...

    Liming Wax

You will need to stain your piece black first and then seal this with a rubber and then use the liming wax. If you lime first and then use the black stain you will stain the lime black.

    Baize

Wallpaper paste works very well and has the advantage of drying slowly and it is easy to reposition. If you do use it, the best way is to prime the surface of the wood with a coat of paste, leave for 24hrs, apply second coat then your baize, leave to dry then trim with a scalpel. (This method...

dovetail jig that doesnt need router?

Jacob is right, you don't need any jigs to make dovetail joints, you don't even need a guide, all of the dovetail on the finest antique furniture were cut by using the tails as a template. With a little practice you will be making good close fitting dovetails in no time at all. Have a look at...

Hi Luke, I have many years experience in restoring fire damaged antiques and I am willing to advise you about how to resurrect your linen press but as it is such a large subject I will need at least one photo so that I can guide you in the right direction. Regards. mrpercysnodgrass.

    Finishing oil

If you apply the wax with a wad of '0000' wire wool, rubbing it in with the grain it will de-nib at the same time.

    french polish wrap

Hi Dan, I like your website, you have some interesting commissions on there, is that bog oak on your table or stained? With regard to your original question. You can buy a combined brown paper and bubble wrap, it is very strong yet supple and smooth( this is beginning to sound like an eighties...

    Power Plaining wide boards

I agree with Jacob, the erosion of the soft fibres between the harder grain gives a lovely patina to old timber, however having worked just outside Zürich restoring furniture I know that patina is not appreciated in Switzerland. If you want to smooth the boards I would go down the power sanding...
