    Ercol refinishing

Members on this forum like to give informed advise on questions asked. I counted nine questions in your post, I only speak for myself here but I find nine questions a bit overwhelming! I do have the experience to answer your questions but frankly I would be here all night if I addressed them all...

Best heat gun and advice needed - sash window refurb

I have been using heat guns for over 32 years at work and by far the best one I have used is a Black and Decker my last one was in daily use for eight years. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000 ... 1000489863

Re-Finishing Oak Table - Degreaser Stain

I'm not sure about carpets, it may depend on the type of stain, bicarbonate of soda is good for carpet stains. Fullers Earth will work on almost any medium, but is primarily used to absorb grease and oil but will take up colour as well depending on whether the colour is oily or not. I use it...

    reclaimed wood furniture

Hi Davin, I find most artificially distressed furniture looks contrived unless it is done really well. All of the methods mentioned above can and will work but you must take great care with scorching and sand blasting, not to go too far. One of the best timbers to use for creating worn finishes...

Re-Finishing Oak Table - Degreaser Stain

Fullers Earth is the best product for this type of stain. It is really cheap too at around £5 for a kilo. axminster used to sell it but I just had a look on their website and could not find it, however your local art supplies shop should stock it or there is a link below. The best method to use...

    wood bleach

It depends on how light you want to go, Oxalic is a fairly mild bleach, if you need to go lighter then you will need Hydrogen Peroxide. http://www.agwoodcare.co.uk/Item/fiddes_bleach_set

    Re-finishing teak veneer sideboard

For a Teak sideboard, oil stain would be ok, just make sure you leave it a full 24hr to dry but you could really use just about any stain. I would use a spirit stain followed by 6 - 10 coats of Danish oil, when dry cut back with 240grit down to 400 grit then wire wool with '0000' with the grain...

    Any ideas what caused this?

Hi Rodger, I can think of three possible causes. 1. The wood has been bleached with hydrogen peroxide and has not been properly neutralised. Usually this would produce small pinprick bubbles. 2. Some sort of chemical spill, including cat/dog pee. There are no drips. 3. Intense heat. looking at...

    Military Campagin Chest desgins?

Hi Richard, there are many different designs of campaign chest, but they are mostly very similar. They are always in two equal halves. The original ones came with their own pine packing boxes, the feet would be unscrewed and put in a drawer and some were secured with bolts through the pine...

    Finish stripping and refinishing advice

I think if you try to sand the lacquer off, even by hand, you will be in great danger of going through the veneer. What stripper are you using? You might have more luck if you use a peel away stripper like this one http://www.restexpress.co.uk/acatalog/Peel_Away_7.html or if you can get it...

where can i get tiny hinges?

    - How I'm going to get them exactly in the right place so that the lid remains flush to the bottom all round I don't know! Hi Madge, One way of getting hinges to line up is to cut them into one half of the box say the lid. Then add a little glue to the other half of the hinge, line it up and...

Hi Rodger, how many nails do you have and how much do you want for them?

    refinishing

To sort the runners out on the drawers, they will need planing flat and new timber added. The way I do this is to get a straight edge and position it at the lowest point, clamp it to the side of the drawer or if the clamps are not deep enough you can screw the straight edge to the drawer side...

    refinishing

I have just noticed the drawer runners are quite worn, if they are not going to be patched or replaced it is a good idea to give them a rub with some paraffin wax ( the little tea light candles are ideal )

    refinishing

Hi Glynn, it looks like you are doing a really good job. The crayon should stick, the best way is to soften it slightly with some gentle heat then push it into the dent using a credit card. Take off the excess wax using the back of some old sandpaper, bend the sandpaper up so the edges do not...

    refinishing

glynn, you can steam out some of the dents and scratches, the best way would be to soak the dents with water, leave small puddles of water on the dents for about 20mins then soak them again with a wet rag. place the wet rag over the dents and then apply heat with an iron. keep working the dents...
