    Does anyone forage for Mushrooms?

Many years ago we went on a guided walk around Croft Castle with one of the countries top Mycological Consultants hoping we would gain enough knowledge to be able to forage for mushrooms on our walks. It left us so fearful we have never picked and eaten a single mushroom!

    Laser level recommendations

I bought the Dewalt one for doing DIY, it has mostly been fine but there have been a few occasions when I have needed to use it where the daylight has been strong and a few occasions when I have needed it outside and for those jobs it was completely useless, I resorted to the reliable spirit...

    Reviving wax

I would melt the wax over a gentle heat, add white spirit, give it a good stir then allow to cool.

    Non toxic treatment for birdboxes

Copper will be fine just make sure the inner edge is nice and smooth.

    Non toxic treatment for birdboxes

"A metal plate with appropriate size hole should be fitted to deter greater spotted woodpeckers. They can open up the hole and remove the contents." I have another bird box with a sloping roof, it has a brass plate around the hole but yesterday I watched in horror as a magpie landed on the roof...

    Non toxic treatment for birdboxes

I made one yesterday with my grandson, it is a design I have been using for twenty years or more and I always paint them with Cuprinol garden shades which is a microporous paint, always plenty of punters eager to take up residence. The photo below on the left is the new box for my daughters...

A plea to all hydrologic engineers.

Funny you should say that. I put in an FOI to the EV to ask them what information they had on my section of brook. Absolutely FA was the reply which is why I keep asking them what level they put flood zone 3 at for my property and why they can’t answer me because that would be admitting it is...

A plea to all hydrologic engineers.

Jameshow I have taken many measurements but not sure what to do with them now! I have looked at YouTube vids on the Simpsons rule but I'm non the wiser. When I said I was a complete dunce when it come to maths I was not being modest, I have the certificate to prove it!

A plea to all hydrologic engineers.

We have had two 1 in 100 year floods in recent times and neither of these floods has broken the banks of our brook In the EA 2007 review of floods, chairman Sir John Harman said in his forward “Over 55,000 homes and businesses were flooded this summer as we experienced the wettest May to July...

A plea to all hydrologic engineers.

James how, You are spot on when you say the council want a professional taking the buck, they have actually said as much.

A plea to all hydrologic engineers.

Thank you for all your replies. As you can imagine this is a complicated process, the accepted convention is that clear span bridges do not cause extra flooding and some county councils including Devon but also water authorities in Australia and Canada state this in their published material with...

A plea to all hydrologic engineers.

Thank you for your reply Deadeye. it is indeed a load bearing elliptical arch but I don't know how to measure it. I suppose it needs to be fairly accurate but not precise if that makes sense. Is there a way of measuring a space like this? I was thinking I could measure up from the sides to make...

A plea to all hydrologic engineers.

In my ongoing battle with Herefordshire planing department to get permission to build a bridge over the brook in my garden I have just one obstacle left. The drainage department want me to commission a 1D and topographical survey to prove my clear span bridge will not cause flooding to my...

    Superglue

Starbond is the best I have used, the applicator bottles with their long spout makes it easy to be precise, they also do a brown one which does not leave a white edge and I like the large bottle of accelerator which decants into a small pump action bottle.

    Urushi

It is my understanding Urishi lacquer is very toxic, I think there are only one or two people in the country that use it. It might be a good idea to contact the V&A, they may be able to put you in touch with a specialist or there is Alex Schouvaloff in London, he is a lacquer expert that does...

Oxalic acid - rinse off after?

Obviously too late late now but oxalic acid should always be well rinsed off. Dry residue/ crystals should definitely not be sanded. The dust is very poisonous. Suggs of madness, his great grandfather who ran a pub down the Kings road accidentally took a swig of oxalic acid which was stored in...

    Dating mahogany(?) drop leaf table

As others have said it is Cuban Mahogany and going by the legs probably made around 1830. It would be a real shame to paint it black!

    How to achieve this colour?

One coat of Osmo ‘honey’ applied with a foam roller when that has dried one more coat of clear Osmo to the Sheen level you or your mother wants. The Osmo honey gives a lovely even golden colour If you work it in well, cross hatching then finishing with the grain. I did my engineered oak floor...

    Found Floor Standing Morticing Machine

I am after a mortiser, in good working order preferably with a selection of chisels. A 240v Sedgwick 571, Multico K1 or Startrite 25 would be ideal.
