    Pigment advice

Hi Li. Welcome to the forum. The powdered pigments you were using were almost certainly spirit aniline dyes. You can get them from the big polish supplies but if you just want small quantities then I would suggest using Rest Express who sell Fiddes stains (although they are all the same no...

Masks and Specs and Beards and Shopping

I have been having a great deal of trouble with my specs steaming up when I go into shops, it became so bad one day in the supermarket I found myself doing that dreadful thing, pulling the mask below my nose! I now wear my GVS elipse half mask from my workshop which has eliminated the problem...

    Bleaching Wood

I think you have two options with this, you could sand it back much more aggressively, starting with 100g and working down to 240g that way you will remove the faded surface and you will be left with the darker natural colour. If you want to keep the faded colour then you only option is to use...

Stopping a butchers block top sliding about

I bought these to stop a ramp I made for a wheelchair from slipping on a tiled floor, they worked perfectly, Im sure they will work for your chopping block...

Beech or Mahogany for French furniture

Beech is a very versatile timber as far as finishing goes, in the hands of a good polisher it can be made to look like just about any timber you want and works particularly well as faux walnut or mahogany. It works less well on large flat surfaces so for a dining table you might be better off...

refinishing old veneer table top and getting smell out

If you have stripped the top and left the table outside for two days and the smell still persists I would refinished the top which should cure the problem. It is probably worth treating the underside too, try your baking soda again then seal with a couple of coats.

    Guitar "vine" inlay approach

Another thing...If you use fish or hide glue you can add some Lamp Black powder pigment to colour the glue which will help to disguise any slight imperfection around the edge.

    Guitar "vine" inlay approach

When doing inlay, wheather it be wood metal or shell, I do two things, firstly create a slight bevel on the piece to be inlaid. If the piece to be inlaid is too small or awkward to hold in place and scribe around I stick the inlay to the surface with either fish or hide glue and wash off any...

    Best finish for table tops?

The best easiest tough wipe on with little skill or effort finish is Danish oil. If you follow the instructions you will get an excellent finish that will give you what you are asking for. The hardwax oils are similar but much more expensive and will give you a softer look and if applied with a...

    Veneering a small piece

PVA will be fine, to be honest you could use almost any glue but if PVA is what you have then that is fine. The only downside to using PVA over scotch or fish glue is there will be no correcting and mistakes. Score both the underside of the veneer and your ply with a hacksaw blade to give a...

    Repairing damaged finish...ebonised?

Ebonising is anything that resembles Ebony so the wood can be stained with spirit or water based stain then polished with shellac with pigment added or varnished. It can also be black paint, blackboard black works very well if it is cut down flat and waxed, black spray paint also works very...

    Best type of buffing/polishing attachment?

I assume it is Fiddes Supreme wax....horrible stuff, it has a large amount of parafin wax in its makeup and so will always be soft and sticky. If you try to use any sort of buffing machine with this wax it will just melt it and all the wax you put on the timber will end up on the polishing head...

Chest of drawers and wood type?

It has come up beautifully, well done. The top looks great but I must agree with woody2shoes slotted screws have to be at the same angle, just pick an angle, any angle but all the same otherwise it make one come over all unnecessary.

    Best type of buffing/polishing attachment?

Are you applying wax to untreated timber or is there a finish already on the table top and what sort of wax are you applying?

    Amateur looking for advice

You dont have to invest in expensive specialist brushes to do it either, cheap paint brushes and even tooth brushes work well. In the book the walnut is quite dark but if you wanted a light golden walnut then just use the pallet for the burr oak but with the walnut figuring. If you do give it a...
