    PVA or CA

I've probably come too late to this conversation, as I presume that you have already roughed out your bowls and they are splitting now. But I had a similar problem when I was turning some bits of Bay that I rescued from being shredded. My first attempts split and I gave up. When I came back I...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Most impressive. Some time ago I made several slide whistles and had real difficulty boring the holes straight what is your technique and how is the mandrel used?

shop bought fancy furniture, how do they justify the price?

When I was in Art school on a furniture design course (1969-73), we were taught that the shop price of a piece furniture was 5 times the cost to make it. My first job was in Toy Works at the time the largest manufacture of wooden toys in the country. There for some of our products the box cost...

A nice box and very thoughtful of you. Is it mitered with the pegs, in the last picture, holding the corners together. I've used dovetail wedging with veneers to reinforce a miter but not pegs. The pegs look interesting in their own right, its a shame that they needed to be trimmed. Martin

    Sharp radius bends in plywood

If it just the shape you want rather than the ply look at the front edge you can make a very cheap bend like that from softening and bending hardboard. As they said it is very much a 60s and 70s design, when I was in Art school. I wanted to make a box with that sort of shape and managed to...

The benefits of having rotten wood in the garden.

Like Adam, I have a lot of rotting wood in my garden. We used to see lots of these Stag Beetles. Sadly this is the first one I have seen in the garden for a couple of years. I think that they come out looking for a mate but I suspect that to quote the Rolling Stones this one "Couldn't Get No...

Are Skillsaw designed for left handed people?

As I read comments on this site I've often wondered what hand tool people would take to the proverbial desert island. I can't make up my mind would it be a bow (pruning) saw or an axe. Presuming of course that the island had trees on it.

Stigmorgan, I'm fascinated by your pieces, looking at them you must generate an awful lot of shavings. What do you do with it all? Martin

Getting paid to work on your own home

In my experience you'll be lucky to get through to someone on a helpline who knows the answer to anything slightly unusual that isn't on their online cribsheet. While you wait 30 min to get through you will be invited to look on their website and if you are anything like me you will end up none...

    What Wood Is This?

I think Suffolkboy is right, I thought Chestnut as well, before I saw his post.

I should think it does!! How do you manage to get all the cuts so accurate. I'm impressed by the rings, let alone decorative pieces. Did you do the piercing first and then the front and back cuts for the bulge or the other way around? Do you cut more than one at a time and then slice them...

Going around ever decreasing spirals until disappearing up.........

No gold leaf then Adam? Droogs is spot on. It reminds me of my days teaching Geometric and Engineering Drawing.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I Turned some lovely bowls from fresh Leylandii last year and the smell was wonderful. It reminded me of rose water or Turkish delight. I did similar to you and roughed them out but I was in too much of a hurry to let them dry naturally so I popped them into the microwave for a few minuets at a...

Yet another shedshop Mike's way. Ish

My shed workshop was a much more modest project but one thing I'm really pleased It did was to have a significant overhang/porch over the entrance and an overhang and gutters at the sides. The walls and door apart from in the most stormy weather are always more or less dry and still in very good...

A post about nothing much at all.

This is brilliant so many kindred spirits. First a thread about what have we made from recycled materials and now skip finds. I renovated our house with a lot of stuff from skips. Victorian doors, floorboards, door furniture, bathroom fittings etc and now the materials to make toys for my...

I haven't got a picture of a recent job but everything I make is from recycled materials or firewood. I have enjoyed this thread enormously, I hope it is a regular feature. Martin

New workshop build on pier foundations

A picture would be interesting. Does your roof have a large overhang to keep walls more or less dry? Woops, I thought you meant to construct the garden room from cardboard tubes but on reading the dimension I presume it was to cast the piers. Foolish me. Cheers Martin
