Pascal’s wager for the existence or not of a god comes to mind. I think it was summed up as not a risk worth taking. I don’t happen to agree with him on a god but I apply it to actions to avert a climate disaster.
The funny thing is that a lot of the climate emergency deniers are also those who...
Sadly this is the way of the world and worse . All those stooges of oppressive regimes who are forced not to think or be responsible for their own actions for fear of reprisals.
My memory is that pe benches were Piranha Pine.
Lab work tops Iroko.
Those desks that you opened and kept your books in (and could drop to make dreadful bang ) were beech.
That was in Kent schools which had an architects department that designed their own furniture and much was manufactured...
My experience with all government departments and agencies, after my wife died, was that I had to wait ages to get through to a human and explain the details of my circumstances and reason for calling only to be passed on down the line and go through it all over again. I was repeatedly given...
This thread made me think of the Antiques Roadshow it often has items that are made from beautiful materials and incredible skill and give a valuation far less than if it were commissioned today. People generally don’t value skill or time.
That is exactly how I used to make them 45 years ago though I used the lathe for the wheels. In a fact a few years later 2 of my pupils presented one to HRH Princess of Wales when she was expecting William which she called baby Wales when they visited our school after the Brixton riots. The one...
I hope this is reasonably self explanatory.
The thing Im most pleased with is the jig to stretch the bit of bicycle inner tube. Stretching it to fit in the saw cuts with epoxy on and then releasing it so the rubber becomes fat and a tight fit!
Making the wheels isn’t too tricky. I have lathe with a simple chuck and can turn between centres. I’ve drawn some sketches which I hope explain. Sorry my writing is so rubbish!!
looks like it will have to be in a new post as this reply won’t let me attach anything.
I posted this to the turning thread by mistake. It’s my first venture into my workshop since my wife died and I made her Christmas present 2 years ago. It’s for my great nice who has just started to walk and is about the age to have a mobile toy.
The wood is from a turkey oak which grew too...
Sorry I’m having difficulty loading the pictures I’ll try again.
I may have posted in the wrong section, though the wheels hubcaps and spacers are turned.
Wiggly dog made from a bit of turkey oak from a tree i had to have felled as it grew too close to the house. The hinges are bicycle inner tube. The trickiest part was glueing the rubber into the saw cuts. I made a jig to stretch the rubber so it would fit in easily , then release it so it would...
Could someone explain how Adam suggesting he is Gammon is bigoted or offensive. Apart from seeing Gammon on occasional menus it’s a new expression to this old man.
This reminds me of an incident in 1967. We had been to a beach party on the last day of a holiday in south Devon a load of us set off back to London in my brother’s old van. We had picked up one or two souvenirs along the way.one was a battered road lamp. We got to Yeovil and couldn’t drive any...
This thread made wonder about the tools used.
At the end of Desert Island Discs, they always ask what luxury would you like to take with you. I wonder if you could only take one tool to an island (which had trees) what would it be?
I'm sure you are right about not enough pressure to explode but is it posible there might be sufficient pressure to push the inserted tray and plastic lit off? They are not held tight by screw top. As far as I can remember its the same arrangement in lots of brands polyester fillers. I have...
It’s great to see the advice about pilot and clearance holes.( Though no mention of countersinking) 50 years ago when I was a trainee teacher a colleague told me not to raise my expectations too high. She said you can demonstrate the correct way to make a screwed joint every year for the 5 years...
