    What have we become?

I think I'm rather out of step here, as I happily pay our licence fee for Radio 4, Radio 3, BBC News and BBC4. Its cheaper than a decent daily paper. Its one of the few things about being British I still feel proud of.

    Tiger Moths

What a beautiful model. I took Father to a couple of air crew signings at Salisbury Hall, the De Havilland museum, where he explained the difference of his night fighter mosquito to the ones on show. As you included, the cowlings over the exhaust were important to hide the flames from the...

    Tiger Moths

I certainly don't mind anyone joining in especially someone who knows what their talking about!! I'm going to print out your directions and follow them as best I can. Thank you Martin

    Tiger Moths

Thank you, your reply is a lot of help. I saw a video clip of a chap who whittled propellers/helicopters and it seemed as though he worked by eye. I sawed and filed but haven't been really precise, which I'm sure, as you say, is vital. I love your models. My father was a Mosquito night fighter...

    Tiger Moths

You may be the chap to help me. I've tried to make wooden helicopters for my grandchildren but only the first one flew well, though I thought I'd been pretty consistent with the others. Have you had any success getting any wood to fly? Martin

Well, what is it then for the ignorant? I was just going to ask.

    New computer spec?

We have a 2009 27" iMac which is still going strong but it will not permit anymore OS X updates past Yosemite which is frustrating when there is a current program that wants an update. I can't justify the outlay on a new Mac but a good secondhand one sounds attractive. Where should I look to...

DIY Carbide - round or square bar?

I made mine from square bar, as that was what I had. I have rather regretted it, as working on small internal surfaces the bottom of the bar fouls on the wall stopping the tip cutting. I think that wouldn't be such an issue with round. I filed quite a lot away, perhaps I need to do more but...

Stuff for my BA submission in August. AKA Welcome to The Dark Side.

Hi thanks for the reply, I find quite a lot of stuff being removed from neighbours gardens, by tree fellers. If there is a piece I think may make a little bowl I get a few logs. I've been working on Bay, as I mentioned what I would call American Oak (the leaves are more spiky than the Turkey...

Stuff for my BA submission in August. AKA Welcome to The Dark Side.

This is all fascinating please keep posting. Perhaps a silly question but are you very strong or is there special technique? I split small logs to turn and have had enormous difficulty making any headway until the split is nearly done. I had a real struggle with short (40cm) pieces of Oak of...

    Very Impressive

Wow what a technique with a bow saw!!! Such straight cuts with it twisted like that. I'm going to have to look out my old bow saw and see if I can manage just one straight cut.

    Rose Engine Rosettes

I've had quite a lot of dealings with the Worshipful Company of Turners, in the City. At their biannual exhibitions there are always a couple of Rose Engine Turners with their machines and always very keen to explain their work. I'm sure the Turners will put you in touch with them. It won't...

    Customs declarations and brexit

That sounds like the deal Cameron brought back from his negotiations with the EU but was rejected by his party. They even let the UK put a break on immigration from the EU (if it could be shown to damage employment opportunities here), which is the real reason lots of people wanted out in the...

    Customs declarations and brexit

Lots of passion on both sides of the discussion and also lots of reasoned points of view. What I am interested in is have any of us changed our minds about the referendum result, as a consequence of Johnson's extremely hard Brexit deal? Are they any remainers who are happy with the deal? Are...

    Pot, Bowl or Bell?

As I said most impressive. Your comments about keeping your fingers safe took me back to my first job after Art school in the design dept. of a toy factory, nearly 50 years ago. I had to use an over arm Dewalt saw to cut miters on 20 X12 mm section Beech that finished at about 100mm long. I...

    Pot, Bowl or Bell?

Very elegant, what also impresses me is the quality of jointing the pieces it is turned from. Any chance of a before and after view?

    Customs declarations and brexit

As commented on above there is trouble, as predicted, in Northern Ireland and also an imminent election in Scotland, which could result in independence. If Mr Johnson wished to resolve both issues, a possible solution would be to apply for membership to the European Free Trade Association. That...

    First import from the EU

I send stuff to my daughter and grandchildren in Munich, anything unless its marked as a gift seems to be considered a commercial transaction and the courier starts charging extra adding handling fees, even when there is no duty. I sent a batch of 10 amateur paintings and photographs from my...

    Homemade cyclone dust collector collapsing

Inspired by a coment by Fester. I had a go at making one using a fermentation bin, I had lying around. It worked brilliantly until the hose blocked, the bin collapsed spliting down one side. I sealed the split, inside and out with gaffer tape and pushed on old builders bucket into the bin to...
