    New clock face

When I made a clock for my grandchildren, admittedly not to hang out side, I printed the face and then sealed it in a plastic sleeve. I bought a cheap device at Wilco and a pack of A4 sleeves for less than £15. Not worth it obviously for a one off but if you are associated with a school...

    Lots of hot air

I completely agree. The news at the moment, about almost everything, is is either crying over spilled milk or shutting the stable door etc. This forum has such a range of talents and experience. I'm sure instead of the almost inevitable "change can't work", practical solutions to make the world...

    The realities of tool ownership...

Not such a bad idea. I have just come back from Germany where we used a brand new hire car which had all the modern fandangos (an up grade) As I drove along if it didn't like the line I took birds sounded like a tropical jungle, when I passed other vehicles and had to leave space the steering...

    Stop end or through mortice?

When I did "O" level 50 years ago we were taught, through M&Ts where there was likely to be moisture, as they enable the joint to dry. Stopped mortises were supposed to retain moisture and suitable for furniture and internal work. I have followed that advice making the occasional replacement...

EVs again - the sensible approach

We have been here before. In suburban Bromley the waste infrastructure and fuel delivery (coal) were centred on the railways. The waste yard had a hopper that filled wagons that took the rubbish away. We now have a system where massive trucks removing waste have to compete with the queues of...

New member with a simple question

Looks like Douglas Fir to me. Pine is usually slash cut and so the grain pattern it determined by how far from the centre it is. DF has a sweet distinctive smell, and is quite resiny even after a lot of years.

    De Haviland Mosquitoes.

For those interested in the woodwork on the Salisbury Hall Mosquito restoration, here are a few more pictures. They were taken in 2009 so the aircraft may well be finished by now, I'm afraid I haven't been back. Though if it has been completed you wouldn't be able to see the timber used in its...

    De Haviland Mosquitoes.

These pictures were taken on the same visit and show the view I managed to get of the cockpit looking straight up, it takes a bit of imagination to work out the angle. You may be interested in Project Jericho who are building a mosquito from plans they got from New Zealand...

    De Haviland Mosquitoes.

I took my father, who was a night fighter pilot, to a couple of mosquito aircrew signings at Salisbury Hall, the DH museum. I was able to poke my head inside and was staggered about how confined it was. I asked him how could the pilot get out if they had been in trouble, as the pilot sat above...

    Phenomenal work

Like it or not, incredible skill and confidence. The clip poses a couple questions. 1, What was the log? I think it may be holly. 2 What design process does she go through? As in the clip she knows exactly what size of image, texture and piercing with no reference to a sketch. I have some...

    Critique my first project.

I think you have made an excellent start, and I hope you feel encouraged to keep going. The more you cut the better you will get. I found that making sure the wood for the tails is in the vice at the angle you need to cut so you perfect you skill at sawing down vertically and square to the vice...

How to prevent external corners on window sills opening up? and could I tape over them?

I can't add anything to RobinBHM's excellent reply but your reply reminded me of a little rhyme we used to say to the kids in school. In glue and dust we place our trust If that won't do then putty must If all that fails then bloomin big nails!

Sadly, that isn't how pensions, apart from annuities, work. Payments are made from current contributions (or borrowing). There is never a pot to get pensions/benefits from. Whatever the tax is called. I have every sympathy with Ben102009, having spent 40 years hosting other people's children in...

    Workbench Vice advice

In schools, I think, we had the inner jaw protruding because after several years the bench tops were reversed and if there had been a notch cut out it would not have lined up were most right-handed students expected the vice to be (as a lefty I would have preferred the vice at the other end)...

    Electric vehicles

Amazing that you point out it will only take one years production of these materials to replace all the ice vehicles. Why has it taken so long for manufactures to get around to doing it? Production of course is always linked to demand. I understand that Lithium is one of the most abundant...

    Canada 50C/120F

Because you found this Rorschach, does not make it true. I have elderly friends in Vancouver who tell me people have been dying there because of the incredible heat and they are very worried. I believe them. I suspect that far more deaths would be attributed to climate change if you included the...

    Electric vehicles

Good questions and points. If everyone had an EV with reasonable range there would be little difference to taking ice to the petrol station. In fact as lots of people would home charge only those without would need a public charger. Businesses will proved the charge points needed when they see...
