Why can't I flatten the back of my mortice chisel?

Thanks Terry thats good reasoning! back to my comment I can easily see now that maybe 5mm or 10mm can be beneficial but the rest of the entire back is for cosmetic reasons?

Why can't I flatten the back of my mortice chisel?

Sorry but I have to ask - other than the mirror finish looking really good does it make the tools easier/better to use or is it a beauty in the eye of the beholder type of thing?

Wood fillers for oak office table top

I quite like the transparent epoxy idea its easy to get (practice on offcuts to make sure first) and will settle into the cracks after sealing the underside cracks as Phil has suggested - does it matter of the finished level is slightly under the wood surface? What final coat will you use for...

How far gone is too far gone for old wood lathes?

I would leave it alone, you can buy better parts elsewhere on an auction site. I recently watched youtube showing someone who put their headstock and tail on wooden blocks fitted nicely so the fitted both the bed and under the head/tail stocks that gives you greater swing - if you are a welder...

Axminster AC370WL wood lathe. Speed lever issue.

NEVER LEVER OR BANG OR HIT THE CONICAL REEVES DISCS IN ANY WAY. they WILL snap. WD 40 on the shaft will lubricate sufficiently and as you move the speed lever while the lathe is running it will gradually move along the shaft and under where the pulley runs. Also follow the link from Vulcan

How I charged an old removable mobile phone battery

I recently re-discovered an old 1995 or thereabout Nokia phone, the battery as dead as a dodo, it wouldn't charge - BUT gave it 4 hours with a car battery charger on the 6 hour setting and it bounced back to life has been good ever since. Might be something about a higher charging amperage ...

    Variable speed Motor

Have a look again at a domestic sewing machine motor (ebay) or a sewing machine shop/repairers - the controller (foot switch) makes them variable - replace the footswitch with a rotary dial - would be an improvement

Why can't I flatten the back of my mortice chisel?

Glad you have it sorted, I use water as a lubricant when using my diamond stone it helps, about a leather strop -imo leather is softer than steel so I think you will be ok using one. I have seen others use a spray bottle of window/glass cleaner instead of plain water.

I had a Record Power chuck that looks similar in a way to your chuck, mine had small rubber bands to hold the chuck jaw components together as far as I can remember - horrible chuck. I suggest you follow the how to make a screw chuck as Orraloon suggests, The screw Chuck is just held in your...
