A slice of an Oak tree

Thanks all I like the idea a making a cut it might take some stress out of the drying process - perhaps wait until a crack has formed and then follow the crack line and see how it goes. Butterfly inserts in another colour might be good if one of them went the route of a crack then perhaps one...

    Help regarding doors please.

In the original post the "door" said to be angled is I suspect a normal door, but the frame isn't square at the top, so just trim the door top to the same profile as the frame. I had a similar issue to the above (but a hollow door where I couldn't cut off enough at the top to trim to the same...

A slice of an Oak tree

A couple of tall oak trees estimated age 100/130 years old are being removed (not by me and I hate they're going - a property developer in a field near me) in a few days when I won't be around. I suspect the trunks are going to make oak beams somewhere and Ive asked if they would leave me a...

Gtech Cordless Combi Drill Bundle any good?

I'd forgotten I had posted this ------ no replies so I guess everyone (like me) has avoided an investment in a Gtech cordless drill

British Alcosa Hand Cranked Blower and Ancient Forge

To close this, I found someone who wanted to use it and teach others some basics of working with a forge, so I think it's gone to a good home

    16mm SWA bare or conduit

Or leave the cable as is and put the conduit in separately with a couple of drawstrings of reasonable strength so you then have the option as sideways/mark suggests of future adding cabling of various flavours

The Joiner Made Oil Stone Box and Other Bench Stuff Thread

Just a slightly off the topic comment and I know that diamond stones are only a few mm thick but people don't seem to use a wooden box to hold them or do they?

    Flat or chamfered?

Another vote for shape the ends - just the small part (2") where it sits on the iron bench end

Replacing bearings on an old Elu MFF80 electric planer

I don't know the item in question but would a gentle warm of the plastic housing with a hair dryer expand it a little - well faster then the bearing so it may be tempted to come out with your slide hammer?

Advice on mid size lathe please.

I was going to say that if your lathe is good for what you need except the bed is too long then cut the bed removing the extra length you don't need - seemed a good comment, but then I looked at your for sale advert/photo. The bed has fixings to fit the stand which if you shorten will be removed...

    Which driver bits?

I find that Dewalt are good - keep an eye on them and change if any of the wings look a bit dodgy - but then I'm not using them for work

Advice needed for covering a tiny external animal box

If you're not on Freecycle then join and place a wanted ad for your small amount of roofing felt, probably someone local will have just what you need at no charge, if its not too late avoid a totally flat roof

I have been offered (to purchase) a used selection of these tools some are Henry Taylor Diamic, are these better or worse than Henry Taylor Hamlet Craft tool brand? The Craft ones are marked HSS --- the Diamic some are some aren't all have dark handles not light beech or whatever.

Woodwork Bench Build (Using Only Hand Tools) - Progress

Assuming the bench is sound and that the ply is not mid major delamination and that the small extra height will not be an issue then avoid a rebuild (if these Q+A's are ok) It sounds unnecessary to do the extra work for no measurable benefit.

Old tool cleaning part 2 - rust removal with abrasives

Yes another vote Garryflex is great has several grades the finest will finish as dannyr says. Likewise as he says its surprising how a decorator's scraper or a sharp plane iron will take the worst off without digs into the rusty item. Perhaps a copper wire brush or wet/dry with oil somewhere...

    Latest Purchase

The cable through the wall is a good idea. If I see a small generator I might do the same. The boiler internet a light and TV is good. Maybe freezer as well if it will take it
