    Thanks Tom I'm going down the route of a couple of coats of the mix then one of plain and put it away till next spring when I expect a quick wipe over will see it complete/done

    I've been given a wooden handled standard size garden fork - a wire brush and wipe over with oil will do for the tines but without making a mountain of a job - for the handle which is very dry - should I just go with linseed oil and put it in the shed let it soak in and forget it until next year?

    Ah so not the tap washer, if it has an isolating valve for both hot and cold supply then turn one off and see if the taps still drips overnight - if it does try the other one overnight this should help decide which is letting water by and then as Lons suggests go buy a new entire valve

    So back to basics If the drip is from the water outlet/spout on the tap then you need to change the washer. Undo the large brass nut and the assembly will come off. You can then see the washer - maybe held on with a small nut undo nut replace washer and reinstall the assembly. If you cannot...

    Thorougly degrease and loctite should do it or as Phill05 suggests or after cleaning use a nail punch on the top/side of the threaded portion (to the nut) to lock the nut onto the thread
