Pretty much all hand planing is basic, but there is a lot of daftness, dishonesty and/or lack of precise work from most folks. Try and fight flat and you wont fair well, so a good straight edge of whatever description, and long reach angle poise is about the best way to progress without bad...

Have I seen Ishitani with a larger version of those vernier scribe/depth gauges? Doesn't appear so from looking, so guessing it's another prominent youtuber. I wanted to see if it was substantially larger myself, as I've seen regular verniers twice as large.

I'd see if some sawdust might do the trick on an undersized dowel, if it's just wax it should rub off. Might be worth trying, obviously on some scrap, but if it's just wax then the WD-40 folks reckons it can be used to take crayon off walls?

The larger ones are excellent, I try and get at least one every time round. Great for when you want a speedy hold down for something.

I've got a load of this stuff at me folks, whatever it is beside the iroko and meranti, it's the toughest stuff I've encountered and the cap needs to be so close that the smallest change i.e a bit too much off a corner will require fixing. I can still comb the fibres with this stuff, but reckon...
