    Another walking stick

I guess it is hard to see the changes, so here is a bit of 3-D magic from my phone. The rendering is a little skanky on the back, but it does give more of a feel...

    Another walking stick

A little more work - this time on the legs. And a couple of pictures of my workshop. Good natural light and ventilation, but not so good when it rains.....

    Another walking stick

So the next stage is cleaning up what I think of as 'construction lines' to make the shape more realistic. This is a slow process because I need to remove some timber and then smooth off the result before I can see the next bit to remove. I am also cautious because I know that I can't replace...

    Another walking stick

Now some tidying up. Mainly removing lumps from the stick that are not part of the carving. I said that I would be working slowly..... Before After

    Another walking stick

Spokeshave arrived. What a fun tool. I wish I had bought one a lot earlier.... Slimmed down the shaft a little: Now to start some shaping. My method is to stare at the stick for long periods, imagining the finished shape, and then remove some wood that definitely does not belong to the...

    Another walking stick

I feel a little presumptuous doing a work-in-progress - I am self taught and and still learning. My method and techniques may be poor, and the stick may turn out to be a disaster, but I guess you can ignore the thread, or laugh at me, or even (best of all) point out where I could improve. I...

    Seasoning yew log

I am not an expert by any means but would this interest anyone if I did it as a work in progress thread?

    Great Rejoinders

my best ever (perhaps only ) rejoinders.. in response to "the trouble with men is that they think with their b&lls" was "so do women" and in response to "now you are being pedantic" "it depends on your definition of pedantic" Not much to show for a long life I guess......

    Seasoning yew log

Here it is coated in pva and awaiting the arrival of a concave spokeshave:

    Seasoning yew log

I checked, and my most comfortable stick is 1.5 inch diameter. To leave enough margin for removing divots and allowing for raised detailing, I slimmed the shaft to ~2" and shortened the stick.

    Seasoning yew log

But since I am using a hewing axe (something else that I learned about on this forum) 10mm margin for error sounds safer to me! It certainly is easier working green wood (is that the correct term?). If the timber doesn’t split then it will have been a good choice.

    Seasoning yew log

Hmmm, tempting. Roughing out the shaft would simplify things quite a lot. Though my walking sticks end up about 30mm diameter as I find that a much more natural size to grip. So I would slim it to maybe 40mm? Since that is the least interesting part of the process it might be good to speed it up...

    Seasoning yew log

Yes, about 4". I measured circumference as it is easier to repeat, and mm as I am weighing it in kg. I am hoping that repeated measurements will let me track the drying out and tell me when it is time to start carving. The log has plenty of length - about 2m but it tapers. It is almost...

    Seasoning yew log

Hi all, I have a fresh yew log from a friends garden that I want to carve. I have done this previously and have seasoned the log with its bark on. It works and I have had minimal splitting, but removing the seasoned bark is a lot harder than removing the unseasoned bark. My cautious self says...

    Does anyone forage for Mushrooms?

This is good: Mushrooms: Amazon.co.uk: Phillips, Roger: 9780330442374: Books. This one is too: The Easy Edible Mushroom Guide: Amazon.co.uk: Pegler, David: 9781854106315: Books There are a small number of edible mushrooms that I can unambiguously identify. I collect some of those when I find...

    Internet usage.

I once explained the cloud to my Mum, who was technically illiterate. Where is it stored? - you don't know. Who owns the machine that it is on? - you don't know. How safe is it? - they tell you it is safe. How do I know that I can get it back when I need it? - they tell you that you can. Why...

    PlusGas or WD 40

I should think so too. I would not want to drink any if it contained fish oil. Does PlusGas smell nice? We in the motorcycle club used to call WD40 'bikers cologne'.

Joke thread commentary, criticism and explanations.....

Sure, but then you can ignore the thread and not have to read the comments in ther joke thread. At least that is what I am hoping.....

Are we going to have rants about jokes in the explanations thread? :)
