    Shortening a fence

Ok folks I have decided against a circular saw (at least initially) as I reckon my reciprocating saw will do the job. If it doesn’t then a hard point saw is next up. I have fixed some battens as guides and am now waiting for the fence to dry. I learned that horizontal is not necessarily...

    3 names in a hat....

My logic was flawed for sure. But I think yours is too. First draw is irrelevant. Second draw the chance of drawing a different name is 2/3. Third draw the chance of drawing a different name is 1/3. Overall chance is 3/3 * 2/3 * 1/3 = 2/9. I think. 🤫

    3 names in a hat....

I would guess 1 in 9. Reasoning: on the first draw its random. On the second two draws the odds are 1 in three of choosing a predetermined name. so 1 in ( 1 x 3 x 3 ) Interestingly if you had told us which name then the odds drop to one in 27. Don't you just love statistics. For added fun I...

    Shortening a fence

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and observations. The idea of attaching wood as a guide had occurred to me but it is reassuring that this seems to be a recurrent part of the responses. The hand-saw versus power-saw debate is interesting. I can see both points. I actually actually did...

    Shortening a fence

Fast and brutal.... I have not owned a chainsaw for 30 years - too noisy, too dangerous and too dangerous. (mind you a circular saw looks a bit iffy too).

    Shortening a fence

There are no separate panels - it is constructed like this: EDIT: this is a picture from the we as an illustration. Because all my fences face inward I cannot photograph the construction.

    Shortening a fence

That was the plan that I had devised. The query about dealing with the featherboard over the post was aimed at the idea of using a hard-point saw. If I cut the featherboard first and remove it from the top rail, then I can easily remove the top rail, followed by the excess uprights.

    Shortening a fence

@eribaMotters Oops yes. I did mean that I want to reduce the height of the fence. I hadn’t thought of breakout. Hmm, a hard point saw? I have a six metre run to do, sawing horizontally. I’m thinking that would be hard work. I can see the reduction in break out , but I am not convinced...

    Shortening a fence

Hi all, I have a fence that I want to shorten. It has vertical ‘planks’ of feather board(?) nailed to three horizontal fence rails(?). I want to shorten it to two rails. I’m thinking that a circular saw might do the job nicely. I don’t have a circular saw (yet!) so have no idea if this would...

    Speed Awareness Course

Apparently (* no idea where the research was, take with a pinch of salt) more than 90% of people think their driving is above average. If that is true then it means that 40% of drivers seriously over-estimate their (relative) abilities. Who here thinks that there driving is below average? I...

    Another walking stick

Some more work done - I spend 2 hours and don't even make enough sawdust to fill a match box. See if you can spot the differences:

    Joke Thread 4 (closed).

It is better than that. The third error is getting the number of errors wrong. Which makes the number of errors correct - so there are only two errors.

Another update. The changes are getting more subtle each time. Again, the video rendering is less than perfect (It is built from a 3d scan of the carving):

Unfortunately for a whork-in-progress each iteration is less different from the previous as I slowly bring the carving into focus. I have been working around the legs and the head. The piece has developed a couple of splits (checks?), which is disappointing but not disastrous. I will probably...
