    Thread identification help please.

OK, so its not M4 coarse..... :( What do you reckon I should try next........ 5/32 BSW?

    Thread identification help please.

Thanks everyone who has commented. I am still not sure what nuts I need, but it seems the most useful and cost effective approach is to get a small set of m4/5/6/8 from the global tat-bazaar. Even if the nut I want is not m4 the rest are most likely to be useful. If I buy imperial and require...

    Thread identification help please.

Thanks for that both of you. The chest of drawers was British made. Probably 20 to 30 years ago. I’m going to guess it’s an imperial (non metric) thread. So I will order some 5/32 BSW. But I won’t force it……

    Thread identification help please.

We have an old hand-made chest of drawers. One of the nuts holding a handle on has disappeared. I need to identify the thread in order to replace it. The fitting has a threaded bar which goes from the outside to the inside of the drawer front. I have measured the thread of the bar (male...

    Joke Thread 4 (closed).

My apologies - I thought that was a white king being moved - in which case it would have been stale mate (assuming no other black pieces on the board). I was wrong - it is a white queen being moved and so it is checkmate.

How do I know if a quote for work is reasonable?

Well, the third quote came in after I had started this thread. It was the best presented quote (described the job in detail, described the materials, said how long it would take, specifically stated that the area would be left clean and tidy). The price was lower than the others too (~2kgbp)...

How do I know if a quote for work is reasonable?

It is not bridging the damp course but is significantly less than the require 150mm - more like 50mm. The air-brick gullies that were installed have been cut so that there is only an inch for the air to travel down. I suspect one and more likely two air bricks have been covered completely...

How do I know if a quote for work is reasonable?

A four to one ratio? That does make the quotes look more reasonable. I think the job has a higher labour-to-materials ratio than many others. Lots of disk-cutter work,

How do I know if a quote for work is reasonable?

OK, sure, details would help in this case. I was thinking of 'in general', but happy to make the question particular to this case. The patio has been laid too high at the back of the house. I need it cut back and a gravel trap put in. I will need approx six air-brick gullies put in, and I...

How do I know if a quote for work is reasonable?

I have a job that needs doing, and have been trying to get quotes for it. I have only managed to get two so far, and they are both higher than I expected. Now this may be because I am sorely out of touch with current prices, or because the builders don't want the job and so gave a high price...

Bathroom wall not square. How to fix?

Maybe if you install a walk-in shower then the only bit that heeds correction is the bit between the shower tray and the wall that is on the 'skunt'. I am assuming that the walls in the wet area can be tiled/paneled despite the non-right-angle corner. I am not experienced in bathroom design...

Need suggestions: garden furniture for my new home

Hardwood picnic table - out all year, used as a workbench, dining table etc. Has lasted fifteen years so far and no sign of deterioration (other than cosmetic). Teak 'steamer' chairs - in the shed during worst months otherwise out all the time. Cushions brought in when rain is expected. Ten...

    What professional should I seek?

I hadn’t thought of that. It would be disappointing to lose a piece from my dwindling stock only to find it useless. I have some planks that I attempted (poorly) but I can check them to see how they fared. Of course, no two bits of timber will react the same. Phill

    What professional should I seek?

Excellent find. I have sent them an email. They are about 30 minutes away......

    What professional should I seek?

Good idea - if the postage costs are not prohibitive. Unfortunately for this project I need 'planks' 700mm long which could get pricey. Another good idea. The pieces that I have are smallish diameter - max 4" so maybe not interesting to turners. But if there is a local club maybe I could...

    What professional should I seek?

Thanks Jacob, but I know of no band sawyers either. Absolute max plank width needed would be 3" so could that be done on a table saw/bench saw? That might make finding a professional easier.

    What professional should I seek?

I have a thick branch of seasoned yew that I would like to convert to planks - but I am not a planker and do not have access to one.I don't want to purchase a planker for one job, so where might I find a professional who would do the job for me? I have no idea what kind of professional would do...

    Shortening a fence

Just an update - the reciprocating saw worked a treat. The coarse blade ripped fast through the uprights and not too untidily. The posts took a little more work to trim, but probably easier (for me) than using muscle power. And I did not need to purchase any extra tools! Thanks for all the...
