MY new handyman business finally launched :)

First off, Chis, hard luck and Good Luck. I admire someone who picks themselves up, dusts themselves off, and steps up for a new challenge. Well done. As for getting a website up and running so quickly - that smacks of determination. I am not a web-designer, or a graphic artist, or a...

    My dog, advise needed.

The crime for which the native africans are shot is obviously not the killing of the animals, then, but for not paying the ludicrous sum of money for the priviledge. We are a sick, sick species. On one hand we condone unneccesary (even counterproductive) killing for kicks, on the other we...

    Tesco Burgers

Dont laugh - its the economic downturn. How else could they make both ends meat? Seriously, though, I cannot see what the fuss is about. I always thought that burgers were for people that did not care what they ate.

Thanks for that reassurance Lons. I may well go the print-it-myself route. It seems absurd to have to pay a lot for a picture booth when I have sufficient technology for the task sat idle.

I do not have a current passport, so cannot use that route. I think the nearest photobooth is about 25 miles away. If I take a photo in a suitably bland environment, how would they know it was not taken in a booth? I will have to see if we have any photo-paper.

OK, thanks guys for the heads-up. My photocard is well out-of-date. So I have to replace it. Ho hum. Another 20gbp. But here is the rub - what is a photo? The booklet specifies the acceptable size, colour, clothing, facial expression, background and so forth, but nowhere does it say what...

    Thinking about a project

Thanks Andy, you describe my initial plan (ie if what I did last time worked, adapt it to the new project). However, last time I started with two pieces of ready-finished sapele, so joining the faces was simple - but obvious. I have a small plane (that I have never used. Aye, theres the rub...

    Thinking about a project

What a spliff. Takes me back to my yoof. Do the kids still do that these days? The hand reamer idea may be a runner - though I have not done any such work in metal yet. How does one shape the reamer/oldFile? Of course that technology means that any lathe usage comes first (as mentioned...

    Thinking about a project

I have been reading those sources with some interest, but I have not got the tools or skills to make the reamers. Maybe I should contemplate acquiring such, but it threatens to get somewhat costly. I like the idea of making a virtue out of a neccessity - deliberately use contrasting woods. I...

    Thinking about a project

I wish I could turn and bore the blank - but that would require a significant investment in equipment. Laminating has some attractions, but I need to think through the possible problems too. At least no one has answered the last question in the afirmative.

    Thinking about a project

Thank you both for the suggestion, but I do not have a reamer of the correct shape/size. Nor do I know how to make one...... I do have carving tools and patience though. Unfortunately neither allows me access to the entire 600mm of hole I wish to create. Cutting the blank in half allows me...

    Thinking about a project

Hi all, I am toying with the idea of making a wooden whistle (hardwood) - partly for the challenge and learning experience. I have some ideas about how to procede, but lack the terminology and experience to express myself clearly. Any help in clarifying my thoughts would be welcome. My...

    sunrise and sunset

The path traced out in the sky by the sun is not a simpple shape but an analemma. The best description is here : http://www.analemma.com/ (And no, that is not a **** site!)

Creating a plasma ball in a microwave

Technically not the same, but sufficiently similar for a cultural association. (NI3 versus Fulminate (CNO)). Yeah, geeky chemist, but it is what I did for a living for a decade and a bit. Perhaps the common characteristic between interest in DIY and memories of childhood explosive escapades...

    Mahogany or Sapele

Lucky you... I salvaged some from a set of shelves and it made three carved wedding boxes amongst other things. Have fun.

    Our dogs

Nice quote, thanks for that. While I will not pretend our two are faultless, I recognise a lot of the things said in that quote. Our older dog (Collie x Pointer, about 7 now) has some quality that attracts less confident dogs. They seem to idolise her, while she appears indifferent once she...
