    Spring steel?

Thankyou SheptonPhil. I have ordered a packet. A bit pricey (£10.25 with p&p) but if I can renovate the original lock it will be both more in keeping and cheaper than buying a new one. It is real heavy brass(?) construction. The spindle/axle (ok square turning thing) is threaded to screw the...

    Spring steel?

Thanks that is a resourceful idea (and pretty speedy too), but probably outside my competence and tooling level. How to cut, how to bend how not to swear when proto-piece goes pinging off round garage? I am hoping for something slightly easier. Phill

    Spring steel?

OK, this is a long shot. I have managed to get the mortice lock (likely original ~1905) out of the front door (it is actually protected now by a upvc outer door). The lock (bit operated by the key) works fine, but the spring in the 'latch' had gone. I have prised it open and found that the...

What is it called and where can I get one.

Nice site. I have bookmarked it to browse at the weekend. None of the ones on the linked page were euro-cylinder compatible though. I want euro cylinder as the three other doors (upvc) have euro cylinders, and I want to do a key-alike and carry one only key.

    I like that explanation.

    Distance Learning

My mother did OU courses ten or so years back and thoroughly enjoyed them (especially the summer school stuff). My wife did some and decided that she was not academic. I think that there are some taster courses exposed free as moocs (massive open online courses) if you can find a suitable...

    Long time coming..

Good, I am glad. I could not think of non clumsy words so I opted for the song. Been there (sort of), much happier now. Hope things brighten for you as they did for me.

What is it called and where can I get one.

That is a good idea. I was thinking of something like this: but with a knob hopefully, and a hole for a euro cylinder (definitely). However looking through 'ironmongery direct' maybe a separate knob and key-escutcheon would work. So thanks for the ideas and links. More are welcome, but at...

What is it called and where can I get one.

I need to buy a bit of door furniture, and I am not sure what it is called. It is the bit of metal screwed flat to the door over the (square) knob axle (ha - what does the forum sanitizer make of that?) and lock barrel (I have a euro-cylinder). Is the word escutcheon? or is that the bit that...

    Mobile speed Camera Vans

To the OP, yes it would be nice if they sited cameras in the best places to increase safety. Maybe they think that they do. But I am not that vexed if they site them elswhere. I am in the minority called 'below average drivers'. I have at times in my life driven cars, bikes and even small...

    Mobile speed Camera Vans

Very interesting 'experiment' a while back where town planners timed the traffic lights so that someone travelling at the speed limit would see all green lights. They might get stopped by the first, but then, if they drove sensibly, they would see green lights all the way. Sprinting away from...

    Mobile speed Camera Vans

I cannot reconcile these two quotes. I feel your pain, as I spent many years trying to find an argument that justified my picking and choosing the laws I had to obey that did not give leeway to all those irresponsible scrotes that would make ridiculous choices. I failed. If you have discovered...

    Mobile speed Camera Vans

I have a different opnion. Probablyt contraversial, but here goes: I do my best to obey the speed limit at all times. I have spent much skull sweat trying to justify why I, out of all road users, should be allowed the discretion to disobey them. Despite thirty years of effort I have not...

    Project showcase not used enough

Doh! How blind can man be? Very nice work in there. Out of my league though. Even my best pieces would look out of place there.

    How do you like yours?

One I like is smoked mackerel 'pate'. Just use a fork to mash smoked mackerel into a mush with olive oil or mayonaise. Tasty, and cheaper than the supermarket fillings.

    IT Help please

I would like it if the OP went linux...... but he sounded a bit cautious. My advice was tailored to the 'I want to stick with windows' flavour I assumed from the tone of the post. Get a box, turn it on, and it runs....... but I bet Linux would run a damn sight faster on his old box than XP...
