    Is size really important?

Thanks folks - it seems that dilute paint is the way to go. What would happen if I did not dilute the paint?

    Is size really important?

Would have been nice if the previous owners had done that under the wood-chip paper..... before painting it! #-o

    Is size really important?

Now why did that get your attention? We are having some walls plastered, and I have heard that size is important. I assume that size just 'seals' the surface and makes the the plaster less absorbent. We are planning to paint the plaster - would diluted paint do the job? Or would dilute...

    What is it called?

Thanks, I will if I need to - but since the builder just fitted the door (and I have not yet paid him) I will assume that it should be part of the job......

    What is it called?

Excellent, thank you all. Weather bar it probably is. Google images works a treat for this and shows exactly what I want. (EDIT: Though I am not sure how the two girls in bikinis qualify as 'weather bar'. I do hope my builder does not fit them by mistake). I assume they are available...

    What is it called?

On the outside of an external door there is often a horizontal feature at the bottom whose purpose is to divert water running down the door beyond the seal so that it remains outside. Without this feature water can run down the door and past the 'seal', whereupon its only route is inwards under...

Windows Explorer and firewall playing up

I have 64bit mint 13 install I can burn and send. Getting the install image is the hardest bit if you have no Linux to hand. Windows tools do not make it easy. Once You have your first Linux install it is ridiculously easy. If you are set on ubuntu then tell me which iso you want and I will...

Windows Explorer and firewall playing up

I am a year or two behind you - but I use VirtualBox to run XP within Linux. Saves a reboot for the rare occasions when I need it (streaming video or doing Android development). Also means I can revert to a clean XP in seconds. That way you get your partition back and no longer need to dual-boot.

    eBay numpties

I get slightly irritated by the 'people who bought x also bought y' adverts. Why? did they need two almost identical items from different manufactures? Blocks they did. Do amazon think I am a half-wit, just because I shop with them? er .........

    Mobile speed Camera Vans

Quoting me like that has the unfortunate effect of making it look as if I were directing my comments to MMUK. I was trying to keep my tone neutral and my audience general, or before long this thread will degenerate (further?) into a 'he said/but he said' farce. The best way to deal with 'ad...

What is it called and where can I get one.

Interesting site - if only for a definitive measuring process. I will need to see if they do key-alikes.

    Mobile speed Camera Vans

+1 I do not mind a bit of rough and tumble here - though I doubt if anyone will change their mind as a result of a 'discussion' like this. It is an interesting way for both sides to practice their arguments and sharpen their reasoning. Better than assuming that your own point of view is so...

What is it called and where can I get one.

Thanks all ..... this has been an interesting learning exercise. I have a tentative solution now, as a direct result of suggestions made in this thread: One of the posters included a link to a google image search (something that II had not thought of doing) and in their, just by chance, was...

    Mobile speed Camera Vans

For the traveller you may be correct, but, for the victim, I think you will find that it is the sudden ACceleration that does the damage. Or more accurately the application of the force that causes the acceleration. Perhaps it its the transfer of momentum?  If you are going to...

Windows Explorer and firewall playing up

A lot depends upon what sort of software you use, what sort of legacy data you need to access, and your level of technical confidence, but you could try reducung your reliance on the microsoft world. I do not want to start an operating system flame thread, but I have found Linux a lot more...

Best/easiest way to repair kitchen worktop?

I have done a few, and though I would suggest that you wait for an expert to come along with real advice, here are some things I learnt: * Vertical cuts. I am pants at this especially on something this thick. I routed out the shape from the reverse side and used a flush cutter to do the...

What is it called and where can I get one.

Thanks Harry, I have bookmarked that too. So many places to look and I knew none of them. Last time I was doing DIY I was shopping in the 'sheds' and we did not have the internet. There are many helpful people on this site, to whom I am immensely grateful.

    Spring steel?

That was one of my thoughts, but I could not quite see how to ensure enough movement, enough 'spring tension' and make sure the spring did not drop or ping out. It is still an option if the spring steel bits do not work. Restoring the lock is worth it for the quality and workmanship alone. It...
