    Canabis farms

If cannabis is legalised then many people will grow it in their own garden. It is very easy to grow moderate strength plants. the extra supply from home grown will help depress the price. the most damaging drug for society is alcohol, ( followed by tobacco IIRC). I wonder why those substances...

    Electric vehicles

No I don't. I should have flagged my post with a 'joke' or 'sarcasm' warning. Sometimes my humour is too dry for the internet.

    Electric vehicles

Yeah, but what if we make this world a better place and then find it wasn't necessary after all?

So the choice is to begin controlled change of our societies and cultures, or wait until uncontrolled change is forced upon us by one or more of the consequences of our current system. I prefer the adult version myself.

Good public transport at each end would work instead of car, or 'on demand' taxi type thing. We already have the strategy for accessible and fast on the railway. Some trains go fast and stop at selected stations (intercity). Others stop at all stations including the intercity ones. You...

So if not enough scientists agree it is not true. But if too man scientists agree it is a conspiracy? sheesh, who could take your argument seriousl?

So why is the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increasing? And increases acidity at the same time altering the oceans ecology. And warming the seas at the same time. You cannot make the heat energy magically disappear. The warmer seas are one of the main sources of climate...

i am suggesting that communal transportation should be a much larger part of the mix. Good public transport, well designed cities and towns that make walking and cycling more practical. Add good rail networks for longer journeys and freight. Canals even for bulky goods that have no ’best by’...

splitting water takes energy - the energy that is released again when hydrogen is burned back to water. where does the energy that does the split come from? It must be stored on the vehicle or supplied by a cable. If the latter then recharging with hydrogen can only happen while stationary and...

I will concede the point..... Though neither ev nor infernal combustion engines are the optimum solution. Both are still promoting inefficient personal transport, when the optimal solution is, as far as possible, to avoid personal transportation. Public transport and five (or ten or fifteen)...

I don’t think that ev is part of the optimal solution. But Is interesting. Do you have figures to support that assertion?

Thanks, I appreciate the acknowledgement. There are nuances though. My arguments apply to standardised components of a solution that can be reused as part of a different solution (maybe to the same problem). I am sure that there will be counter cases - I just can’t think of any. Another...

Standardisation of those items actually accelerated innovation. Not having to design a battery and holder for an electronics project meant you could concentrate on the fun bits. Standardised TCP/IP means that we can create web apps without needing to write a communications protocol - we can...

Yeah, AA and AAA batteries really stifled innovation. As did TCP/IP and html. So did the three-pin plug and the metric thread system. Imagine where we would be now without them.

    Thread identification help please.

I now have a wooden nut. A 4mm hole (wood bit was too loose. I used a 3mm drill and got some good bite. So a temporary fix while I try to identify the thread. That means that I don’t risk losing the other small parts in the meantime. Thanks Ian.

    Thread identification help please.

Not a bad idea Ian. I have some hardwood scraps. That will give me something to do during the speech tomorrow. as for ’a good hardware shop’ - I am not sure where I would find one of those. The last time I was in a good hardware shop was fifteen years or so ago in Ross on Wye. I now live in...
