    Criticism required........ please

We like the location in every way - literally five minutes to center of town, three minutes to open countryside leading to Exmoor National Park. The brick base is too good to waste, although it would actually be cheaper to demolish it and replace with a pre-fabricated potting shed. Yes, the...

Must try that. I cheated and created a 4x2 beam then lifted into position and tilted it. Probably a lot more work and less accurate than your method, but it will do for now. Will do..... (all outside measurements and in mm). It is a bit difficult to measure the north side as this is on a...

thanks - I will try that. How do I stop the initial rectangle (I assume a cross-section of the timber) beign perpendicular to the standard axes, and instead make it perpendicular to the drawn line? I am trying to learn sketchup and 'design' at the same time.

(homer) (homer) Just fixed the html for the link. Doh! If in doubt go to vanleersum.co.uk and click on the pottingShed link Edit: tried the warehouse thing but could not get sketchup to talk to it (I am running the windows version inside PlayOnLinux on Linux Mint). I probably need to sort...

Hmm, just tried it and got a file.... I am using firefox on linux (mint) and did a right-mouse-click followed by 'save link as'. I just assumed this would work. I did try to attach the file, but the extension was not allowed......

Thanks Rod - not quite what I was after but a fascinating study in the diversity of approaches. If only I had the skill..... For simplicity/cheapness/achievability/maximum-light I would go for a plastic roof. I have not yet figured out sloping timber in SU. So far:

One of next years projects may be the renovation of our 'potting shed'. We had some quotes this year, and cannot bring ourselves to pay the quoted prices (>6k gbp). Admittedly this was skilled people making working in hardwood, but really.... the potting shed already has a brick base and back...

    Spokeshave?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornus_mas But they refer to it as corNel, I have always known it as corMel

    Spokeshave?

I have had my drawknife a few days now (standard delivery ordered Sunday arrived Tuesday). It is pretty much what I expected, and works well enough (any deficiencies are likely to be due to lack of skill). I have noticed some things that may be well-known but: The drawknife bends. This...

    Spokeshave?

Flexcut KN16 I have some flexcut carving tools that do their job very well. I thought that the angle of the handles on this drawknife would give me some extra control (but that was guesswork). The branch is quite oversize at one end - maybe 3" diameter. I may choose to carve that into...

    Spokeshave?

Yes, 'cheap' can be hard to define. It is not always just money - there is time, research and storage involved too. Servicing tools also requires tools and resources (screws, springs, washers) which themselves need to be sourced. I do not know where my local second hand tool seller is, nor...

    Spokeshave?

OK, it seems that I have misunderstood the role of spokeshaves - it seems that the drawknife is a more appropriate starting tool for removing bulk. I had wrongly thought that a spokeshave was the tool to use to start. You guys have put me right on that. I may still need a spoke shave in the...

    Spokeshave?

I have jacknives - I think a different style might be easier as I have a reasonable amount to take off. I am hoping to apply some straightening to a curved branch, and cormel is quite tough stuff. I thought the pulling action on two wrists might be more gentle than the pushing action on one...

    Spokeshave?

Useful hint there - I would never have thought of using the asymmetry. Aximinster have a flexcut drawknife - half of my carving tools are flexcut and I get on well with those. Drawknife then spokeshave. Hmmm wait until payday......

    Spokeshave?

Hi all, winter projects coming on...... I want to thin down a branch of cormel for a walking stick. I need to take a fair bit off. Would a spokeshave be the right tool? I bought a cheap one years ago and gave up with it. It may have been the quality of the tool or my incompetence (though I...

    Linux mint

I think the utility is GRUB, and you are probably using it anyway. In case you are interested, GRUB is a small program that sits at the start of your hard drive. When the hardware has started it fires up the first program on the disk (in this case GRUB) which is responsible for loading the...

    Linux mint

Excellent. That makes sense. I always use the 'something else' option which can resize partitions. Its probably a little unfair on windows to resize its partiton when it is not looking. It certainly ******* about it when it next starts. Last time I did the co-install I found that windows...

    Linux mint

I am running Linux Mint 17.2/mate on a machine that can dual boot into win8.1. I installed the Linux onto a machine (Dell) that came with win8.1. I had no difficulties, though you have to pick the right path through the install. Make sure that windows is shut down. By default it goes into...
