Who is in and who is out?

I have followed the debate here and on the wider media. I find it very odd that we are concentrating on two issues - immigration and the economy - and arguing about so-called facts that are not. Economic forecasting is hugely inaccurate. Some of the 'doom' and 'boom' scenarios are so far...

How to Cut Down Trees without a Chainsaw?

30" bow saw would be my choice. Since you do not want to keep the trees neatness is not an issue. Sling a rope over a high branch, cut the underside until you get bored with that. Cut the top side until it starts to go. Yank on the rope. Rinse and repeat. I have done several like that...

    Cordless lawnmower? Any recommendations?

Not quite what you are after, but we have a Brill. It is mechanical rather than electromechanical, and simple at that. It is designed to cut with the blades just missing the anvil, so resistance to push is minimal. Probably as easy to push as a rechargeable. It cuts perfectly well on a...

Surface for a boggy, sloping path?

If you can peg through it securely then something like this might work: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Instant-Garden-Roll-Out-Path/dp/B007H6IVYM%3Fpsc%3D1%26SubscriptionId%3DAKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q%26tag%3Dduc08-21%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB007H6IVYM Might be a...

Ummm. How do you deal with this one?

Interestingly, in some parts of the world it is better to wash a wound in urine (fresh from the spiggot) than it is to wash the wound in water. IIRC, barring a urinary tract infection urine is sterile. It has just been biologically microfiltered. What lives on Betty Swallocks (or Mary Hinge...

Ummm. How do you deal with this one?

Best description that I heard was "like trying to mop up coffee with a record sleeve"........

    Switch off Windows 10 reminder??

Bear in mind that sometime next year this 'fix' will be upgraded to 'recommended'. IIRC (please check) this means that a machine on default settings will automatically download and install without asking. :(

    electric saw for cutting logs?

+1 for the bow saw. I used to have a chainsaw, but as well as been somewhat scary it was heavy. Have to put it down every time I adjust the log on the saw horse. Best to turn it off too. The start it up again...... I imagine that with one of those saw horse attachments that hold the...

Anyone here good at chess endgames?

Wasted a day on it, eventually swapped sides to see what the phone did. Putting it together this is what the phone expected to happen. R(e1)e7 Pg4 (not sure why, I will need to figure this out) PxP Kf4 Kh2 Ba6 Be3++ Phone is way better than me at tactics..... it spotted this in a couple of...

Anyone here good at chess endgames?

This is how the program plays to your plan (as I understand it): Kh2, Pd6 Pg3, PxP+ kxP, Be6 Three moves gone and no hope of mate next move....... I think that moving the pawns opens up the corner and gives the king more space to move. (Please note that I am not a good player either, so I...

Anyone here good at chess endgames?

The program is a good player tactically (better than me usually) but strategically it is poor. Unfortunately It will play a very good end game. I cannot make mate in four. I can manage about eight.......

Anyone here good at chess endgames?

Nah - the phone knows about en-passant, and that opens things up a bit too much.

Anyone here good at chess endgames?

Thats what I thought. But my phone then did not say 'white to mate in 3' I assumed Rf6+, with the black king's options now limited to six squares, but I cannot make it work.....

My phone reckons white (upper case) to mate in 4 I can not see it..... can you?

    Criticism required........ please

Thanks for all the input. I have been digesting the ideas and contemplating the project. I reckon I can do it, but I need to source some quality, pressure treated softwood. A local builder used some for our decking so there must be some around here. When I have sourced that I can do some more...

    Criticism required........ please

Thank you Robin for taking the time to consider and comment. I really do appreciate it. Separate frames? Yes, I can see that that simplifies construction (more modular). It does mean more wood and less light though. I need to contemplate that - I have time the project will not start until...
