    Boilers, recommendations for and against?

What an unusual idea - worth considering after a few people other people have tried it..... Boiler engineer came round and diagnosed pump failure. 200gbp for pump (apparently Halstead are owned by glowworm who take the pi^H^H mickey). However, the new pump should buy us a couple of years...

    Boilers, recommendations for and against?

More useful facts. I assume that the service has to be carried out by an approved engineer, but not necessarily one provided by the manufacturer. So we need to find a reliable service engineer at a reasonable price (eg BritGas mentioned above). Can I assume that the service prices are...

    Boilers, recommendations for and against?

Thanks this is very helpful...... A magna clean is a magnet to attract iron-oxide? Several folk have recommended them here. Does it work? Where does the oxide go, or does it need to be emptied? The system is old so a power flush makes sense. We had a bathroom fitted a month or two ago so...

    Boilers, recommendations for and against?

Thanks both, that helps (and make swmbo happy as she was recommending Worcester/bosch from her research). 2k2 - 2k5 sound affordable and sort of what I was expecting. I assume that that fitting will include a flue through a sloping tiled roof? There is a suspect-under-current-regs horizontal...

    Boilers, recommendations for and against?

Our boiler seems to have died - not unsurprising but disappointing none the less. I am going to get an engineer to check it out, but being a pessimist I am preparing myself mentally for the 'new boiler' adventure. Does anyone here have recommendations (for or against) any particular...

    Claymore (Brian)

I have no words to express my sympathies.... not sure how much they would help anyway in the face of such devastating news. As someone said above, it has made me stop and think about who and what is important to me. Take care of yourself and those around you.

    Thats the stuff.... perfick. Thanks

    (very) small wooden 'fence'

Excellent lateral thinking. Initial search only provides 30cm lengths, 2" high. five and a half quid a foot seems reasonable though.

    (very) small wooden 'fence'

Hmmmm..... jig making. I have not done that before, but it is worth considering.

    (very) small wooden 'fence'

I am considering creating a small 'fence' for the shelf in my camper. I am imagining two strips of timber molding (pine is fine) joined by lots of lengths of dowel (3-4"" long). Is there anything commercially available? - I am not sure what to search for. I have a pillar drill, but getting...

How to fix a leaking waste outlet

Me too. I am no good at cryptics, but the tangential approach made me smile. Happy new year.

    is it just me?

I would be interested in learning what you mean - if you could explain in more detail I would be very interested. I have made some boxes, probably with less skill, but do not know how to judge the proportion and design. A little learning might help my future efforts, or at least increase my...

    Currys/PC World

I tend to agree - annoying, but part of the new shopping reality. Prices sometimes seem to change by the minute. However if you really want to buy cheap and return original you just need to keep the new one and return the original. More work if you have already set up the original but TANSTAAFL.

    Merry Christmas/ Woodworking obsession

I was going to post seasons greetings, and and thanks to the forum members for all the help I have received - you beat me to it, so I will add to your thread if you do not mind...... This is a friendly, helpful forum full of knowledgeable folk who share their wealth of experience freely -...

Background music, everywhere there's background music

I am very entertained when songs from my yooff are playing in morrisons.... you know, the stuff our parents grumbled about and we thought so daring and rebellious. Hendrix fer chrisake.... shopping for ready meals to the sound of 'all along the watchtower' and 'purple haze'. Yeah, I know All...

What's the BEST Pen You have used?

Parker Duofold for me. Not that I am a connoisseur, but many years ago I lucked on a pair at a bargain price in smiths. Made them a ridiculous offer and they accepted. The 'bonus points' paid for a couple of packs of cartridges. I have always preferred fountain pens, and these are very nice.

    keyless car theft

I am not sure that it is just 'luddite unions' safeguarding their jobs. Maybe I am wrong, but I am not sure if the general public are ready for driverless trains. I would like to see some survey results. I can believe that, under normal circumstances, a simple controlled environment like...

    keyless car theft

Excellent idea.... If we cannot make driverless trains safe - an environment where most variables can be controlled - how can we hope to make driverless cars safe? So completely automated trains make a good stepping-stone to completely automated road vehicles. How many people would feel...

    keyless car theft

There are some interesting things to consider with cars and computers. Suppose the car detects a crash about to happen, cannot be avoided. It could hit the wall and kill only the driver, or plough into the bus queue and save the driver but kill several innocent bystanders. What should it do...
