    Attaching Breadboard to a tabletop

Hello, Why do you want to use a sliding dovetail in this instance? I can't see a situation where a sliding dovetail BBE would be an advantage, but the difficulties in making them are high. As custard says, they only project a short way into the BBE, so leverage on the ends is a problem. Keeping...

    Cutting tenon cheeks.

Hello, Did you mean 12" Irwin push saw ie Western tenon saw? Otherwise we might be talking at cross purposes. If you do mean tenon saw then: I don't know what skill level woodwork you are at, so don't be offended if I ask if you are cutting the tenon cheeks right? I suppose you might have a dud...

    tilgear

Hello, I have the Veritas scraper plane myself, and the blade can be bowed with a knob, to avoid tramlines. I'm not sure this is the case on the LN is it? If not, as I suspect, I would probably ignore any tramlines as the scraper plane would not be the last tool to touch the work anyway, going...

    tilgear

Hello, For veneer ground prepping, a toothed blade in an ordinary Bailey plane will do. Workshop Heaven stock Kunz ones IIRC. Shouldn't break the bank. This will also be good for cranky grain. A toothed blade in a scraper is not likely to get much use, since a scraper in its standard form is...

Hello, What plane blade do you want? Mike.

    Cutting tenon cheeks.

Hello, Our School saws are 10 and 12 inch Irwin and have been well received by pupils and staff. I don't know how much better you expect a saw to be, to be honest. I could understand if you said the handle was uncomfortable, or causing lack of control because it wasn't shaped to fit you, but...

    Cutting tenon cheeks.

Hello, Hello, In fact the Irwin hardpoint tenon saws in Western style are really quite good. Cheap enough to buy one and a good second hand saw to refurb at your leisure ready for next time. We use them in school and the kids get on with them really well. They are a bit light, but good and...

How can a tabletop with a split 45 degree joint be repaired?

Hello, I agree with the above; seasonal movement of the centre panel will always cause the joints to open up, mitres have poor gluing strength at best anyway. The splines are not even orientated the right way to give the mitres any strength, either. Tablecloth? Mike.

SIP Heavy Duty 14" v Record Power BS350S 14" Bandsaw

Hello, It is not just power, in fact this is less of an issue as solidity of the machine. Don't forget, horsepower can be utilised differently. Slower blade speed and feed rate will give more power to the cut than a faster blade speed. Heavy iron wheels will have a lot more momentum and can be...

SIP Heavy Duty 14" v Record Power BS350S 14" Bandsaw

Hello, Deep cutting up to the machines maximum is more of a theoretical possibility, or a once every blue moon expectation. If you really need a machine to accurately cut veneers at the depth you state, I think you should look for a bigger machine. If budget is an issue, a good used industrial...

do i need a table saw?

Hello, How are you going to make the Shaker pegs? You'd better put a wood turning lathe onto the list as well! :D Mike.

    Starting a career in woodworking?

Hello, Almost anything else pays better than being a furniture designer and maker. My advice is to do almost anything else and keep woodwork as a hobby. I know almost all of the better designer makers in the North of England and they all struggle to some extent and many, as Custard comments...

    Stainless steel cabinet hinges!

Hello, Thanks for the link, these look like just the thing. £2.50 each for the same size as the Brusso I was looking at. I wonder which I should buy  Mike.

    Stainless steel cabinet hinges!

Hello, I'm just completing a black walnut blanket chest and wanted to hinge the lid with something of a high quality, and also like the look of SS with the walnut. I know Brusso stuff was never exactly cheap, but had to steady myself against the furniture when an Internet search priced the size...

    Leather and Rust

Hello, Tannin and tanning are not the same thing. In fact leather used to be tanned with dog poo in Victorian Britain. :| I store my chisels in a leather tool roll and as long as they have been put away dry, have never rusted, even slightly. Mike.

Suggested Larger Try Squre / T Square

Hello, Why don't you make one out of plywood or something? Those tee squares are nice and accurate, but square is only as good as the reference face of the timber you are marking, so super accuracy of the square is lost anyway. It is all very well a square being accurate +/- .001 for the length...

    Hand Planing Lessons?

Hello, It was really good fun helping Ste with his planes. It is nice to see young, enthusiastic people getting into woodwork. There might be a collaboration in the near future, on a desk project, so keep an eye out for a WIP. Mike.

    LN No9 Mitre Plane

Hello, This is true, I'm sure a Stanley jet cut would do as good a job. But they are made in the Far East or Mexico or somewhere the labour force are slaves. And this is the only example you can think of, isn't it. Find a dovetail saw or try plane or whatever, made by fairly paid Western...

    Drill bit size - inscriptions

Hello, The drill shank gets hard towards the lands and cannot be stamped with the info. Higher up, the shank is softer, so the numbers are stamped there. If it could have been done where the chuck did not mark the shank, it would have! Drills all rattling around in a box is no use anyway...
