    Jointer Plane Blades

Hello. Ahh, yet another useful technique if you find it so. There is so much variation in how we all use tools. Mike.

    help me spend my money

Hello, What precisely was expensive, the wood or the veneering course? Mike.

    Jointer Plane Blades

Hello, It is not the fact I disagree with clambering jointer irons, I know it works if you choose to do it. It is David Savage's insistence that it MUST be camberd that I do not agree with. In fact if you read some of his musings, he actually claims it is difficult/impossible to correct out of...

Hello, A book on veneering? Mike.

    Jointer Plane Blades

Hello, Funnily enough, most people I know DO camber their jointer blades. The camber is so small that it should not affect jointing edges. In fact David Savage (wrongly IMO) says that jointer planes must be cambered. It works for him obviously. Having said that, I keep all my iron dead square...

    Curly maple

Hello, Water borne poly will do nothing to accentuate the curly maple, though, colourless it might be. Since the maple will yellow somewhat with time, I wouldn't worry too much about adding a little colour from the finish, if it brings out the curl. Oil is the simplest way to be sure. Flooring...

    anyone work with ebony?

Hello, If you are still interested by then, PM me the adress and I'll send some veneer. Or I could veneer up a board for you. Mike.

    anyone work with ebony?

Ahh, not in Cyprus, didn't read that. But still could be posted just the same. A small board is easy to veneer. In a nutshell, get some plywood or MDF as cauls a bit bigger than your board and plenty of clamps. Wax the cauls so they will not get glued by mistake. Glue the board, apply the...

    anyone work with ebony?

Hello, I have some wenge veneer, I could let you have enough to do your job with, if you'd like. You'd only need to color the edges that way and the front and back would be real wood. Something like sapele would work. Veneer both sides and colour the edges with a sharpie or something. Mike.

    anyone work with ebony?

Hello, Perfectly flat. I suggest the unevenness bit is nonsense, in fact. Something like Douglas-fir can get high and low portions when sanding, because of the vastly diffent density in the early/late wood, but wenge does not vary in density to anywhere near the same degree. It was not an issue...

    anyone work with ebony?

Hello, Don't believe all you read online! I just completed 5 trinket/jewellery boxes with wenge components and it is absolutely fine. A little hard to work, yes, but hoe hard to work do you expect ebony to be. Wenge is beautiful! Mike.

    Wacky new form of measurement.

Hello, As soon as something is not an exact multiple of a metre, you are forced to use mm's. 2437mm is 8 ft. Now cut that in half in metric and see how easy it is! I never have to use 32 nds or 16 ths or 8 ths if the job does not need it and you don't need to even see them on the rule. You are...

    Wacky new form of measurement.

Ahh, but you don't measure an 8 by 4 sheet in 32nds! in metric you are forced to measure everything in mm. Architects measure houses in mm for Pete's sake! Le Corbusier realised that metric was flawed so devised his Modulor system, based upon the height of an English policeman- 6 ft. That...

    Wacky new form of measurement.

Hello, But these fractions are never used, no imperial rule is calibrated in wacky fractions; you have no argument there, I'm afraid! And fractional calculators are common, I'll bet there is an app for your iPhone! A measuring system that uses units by the thousands, in divisions that you...

    Pricing

Hello, Another way of looking at it is; if the client loves the 6 you do and says 'I have a friend who wants to redo their stairs and wants 100 just like mine' would the price you charged make your heart sink? If so, you are too cheap! Mike.

    Table refinishing questions

Hello, Are you sure? Custard is right about the oily nature of this wood giving problems to film forming finishes like poly varnish. Sometimes it prevents them from curing and even if they do eventually 'dry' can remain soft and not completely bonded to the surface. If you are adamant about...

    Hammer N4400 Tracking Issue

Hello, It is because the Kity does not have crowned tyres. My first bandsaw was a 613 ( I still have it in storage) You are right about the tracking it was great and never suffered blade drift unless the blade was totally dull. Crowned tyres are best set with the blade set centred on the tyres...

    Burnisher

Hello, I have a Pax one, but find it does get scored on hard scrapers such as Veritas ones. It is fine for the usual saw plate card scrapers and gooseneck etc. Someone gave me an Axminster gift card for a thank you for a job I did, and decided to 'waste' it on a Lie Nielsen scraper burnisher...

Common issue with Hand Powered Drills

Hello, The drive gear is connected to the operator, who would not let it float, certainly not continuosly, to find the sweet spots of the mating pinion gear teeth. To be fair, although there are the odd rough ones, in the main the sloppy nature of these tools work well enough. That said, I love...

Customer demanding rebuild after 7 months of use or refund.

Hello, Sadly, it sounds to me the job was not fit for purpose. You can't really set a maximum weight limit, you have to over build to accommodate unknown circumstances. It is different to Custard's scenario where the customer specified floating shelves. Obviously the nature of having little in...
