Does this look like pine to you?

Hello, If the rest is solid mahogany, then you will be right about it missing an upper case. Veneering is not too hard, joining is not difficult, either. Hammer veneering with hide glue is the way to go. There are some online videos that explain. It is worth a try, staining pine to look like...

Does this look like pine to you?

Hello, Joining 2 or 3 leaves together to get the width you need is the usual way. Is it possible the piece was once veneered and been stripped off at some point. Much antique furniture was made of pine or even oak and then veneered. There was a fad of stripping the veneer off badly worn...

ISO Flat toothed saw blade for tenons

Hello, Cutting comb joints with an 8 inch wide kerf blade is a lot different than cutting tenon cheeks with something around 12 inches. Sack the idea, you would have to be nuts. If you want to do tenons on the table saw, use a regular kerf rip blade for the cheeks and a crosscut for the...

ISO Flat toothed saw blade for tenons

Hello, I'm assuming you want to cut tenons with the timber held vertically in some sort of jig, so the saw blade cuts the tenon cheek? You want a wide kerf blade so it removes all the material in one pass? My advice is, don't. That is potentially an awful lot of material to remove in what is...

    wood tannins

Hello, It is not about the tannins, although they will be about the same wet or dry. Wet wood simply does not have anywhere for the dye or chemicals to go. Once dry, the wood cells will absorb the dye in the place the water once resided. I think you will have to use some exterior wood stain or...

Hello, It's a land of milk and honey, if you milk cows and keep bees. Classic! Mike.

    table saw ripping timber

Hello, I have to have a wood machine safety certificate for my job. Sometimes the industry standard is not necessarily applicable to home hobbyists, but some are good sense too. Partial thickness cuts for rebating for instance, are not allowed in industry if the crown guard is removed, unless...

How do you throttle a Bandsaw

Hello, Tuff saws blades are fine, but your saws ability to tension the 3/4 in one is the thing. I use those blades in my bandsaw, but mine is industrial and will tension it. (Axminster 5300) It might be that that blade is tensioned fine for thinner ripping, but a resaw will test that, and it...

How do you throttle a Bandsaw

Hello, I think your blade it too wide. I would use a 1/2in 3-4 tooth per inch. From tuff saws. You will have more chance tensioning this width blade and the variable teeth reduces resonance during the cut. I bet a pound to a pinch this will solve your problem. Mike.

    table saw ripping timber

Hello, It is not 'fine', it is doable in a pinch, but seriously, I would avoid doing it as a matter of course. Partial thickness cuts should be avoided unless special guarding is devised to do it safely. By the time such a device has been designed/built, it usually negates the 'convenience' of...

    table saw ripping timber

Hello, Never remove the riving knife! If it stands above the saw blade height, then you can't do what you propose, unless you can shorten it, but don't remove it. Deep cutting with two passes of the tablesaw is dodgy, at best, but a partial cut without the riving knife is asking for trouble...

How do you throttle a Bandsaw

Hello, I might have been misleading; I mean I never had to use any dodgy methods to compensate for blade drift, setting the blade's teeth off the front of the tyres induced no drift. Flat tyres work! Mike.

How do you throttle a Bandsaw

Hello, Steve, the first bandsaw I had was a Kity 613 and always set it up, as per instructions, with the teeth set off the front of the flat tyre. At the time I was reading how to correct bandsaws for drift, setting fences out of parallel to compensate for the out of straight cut line etc. and...

Liberon spirit wood dye and french polish?

Hello, Dye should not contain pigment, in which case you will not get paint! However, a lot of these dyes, are actually dye / stains, which contain both dye and pigment. I don't know if Liberon is like this, though. It is not 'making paint' that is the issue, but the removal of the dye when...

Liberon spirit wood dye and french polish?

Hello, Liberon make ethanol based, water based and spirit based dyes. Seems like you have the ethanol based one. Usually you would use the one that was dissimilar to the polish's solvent. So the spirit based one recommends caution when applying an oil finish; this would be good however, for...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Hello, When cutting mortices, leave a mm or two at the ends, chop to full depth and any bruising will happen in the sliver of waste at the ends. Then pare away the those bits right at the last, to remove the bruised bit. Nice and crisp edges that way. Mike.

How can I apply veneer to cylinder/conical furniture legs?

Hello, Veneering with hot hide glue is likely best. You could probably find a good method of doing so online. Conical would not be done from one veneer, you would have to cut tapered veneer so that it would go round the cone and maintain the grain direction along the long axis. It is possible...

    Louro Faia supplier.

Hello, Thanks for that I've used timberline before and is worth a try, it's just that it was available until quite recently, and now seems to have dropped off the map. London plane is a nice wood, but not as stunning as Louro Faia. I might try some as a substitute, though. The boxes I just...

    Louro Faia supplier.

Hello, Does anyone know of a supplier of Louro Faia, AKA Roupala Lacewood. I used to be able to get it quite easily in small quantities, but I've used the last I had making some boxes and I'd like to do some more. It is a South American timber esp Brazil, is there some difficulty getting...
