    Routing a table top advice

Hello, You are talking about using a 'large horizontal crown bit, for a shallower effect'. I'm afraid these are likely to be bits not to be used in a hand held router. I would think again, large diameter bits can be dangerous. Inexperience, a massively powerful router and a big diameter bit do...

    New square required!

Hello, I wonder if fixing an out of square square will also simultaneously yield a 45° that is 45°. Unlikely, and when you file away at it there will be no returns on the thing. Advising anyone to buy a square that isn't square and fixing it is lunacy. And die cast zinc certainly does move, at...

    New square required!

Hello, At least until the die cast stock moves and it goes out of square again. A Starrett costs less than 100 so you can't save this much and they are manufactured to guaranteed tolerances of within 4 thou per foot. Mike.

Hello, What a kind offer, I might just do that, thanks! =D> Mike.

Hello, I like my Tormek, but it has its limitations, so I was considering getting a dry grinder to supplement it. I have a Tormek toolrest mount, so I can use the tool jigs etc. on another machine, but probably needs to be a wide wheel grinder. Your post just got me thinking, though. I have a...

    New square required!

Hello, Here you go! Axminster used to sell them, but don't anymore. Or you could look at Colen Clenton who makes fabulous marking tools. Classic handtools used to sell them, but don't anymore. No one wants them, it seems! Mike.

Planer thicknesser .... which one which brand.

Hello, I would change the motor rather than use a static phase converter. The motor only runs at 2/3 the power with a PC, there might be a problem with bogging down. A new motor is likely a cheaper option, though price in a new NVR starter too, the one for the 3 phase is unlikely to have the...

Hello, Did you buy the pro edge because you found the chisel in the garden? Mike.

    So... hardware for sharpening gouges.

Hello, I have the yellow one of those multiform slips. Can't say I get on with it. The shapes almost never match the shape of the gouges and they are easy to nick with the tool. I much prefer wet and dry on dowel or triangle section bits of wood. Then honing paste or autosol as suggested above...

    ploughing frustrations

Hello, The other thing is to not push down too much. When you plane with a bench plane, there is a certain amount of downward pressure needed, but it is not quite the same with a plough. For a start, the blade is a fraction of the width, so a similar downward force of a bench plane acting on a...

    Top uses for combination plane?

Hello, The timber he makes the frame and panel doors from is just Yellow Poplar. Ordinary and dead cheap and available at all timber merchants. (Not DIY sheds or builders merchants) great for painted kitchens etc. It is often green but fades over time and light exposure. Mike. Mike.

Veneering Project Best Board To Use?

Hello, Absolutely, do both sides at once in the vac bag. Do the panels between 2 sheets of MFC or similar, with all the corners and edges eased so the bag won't puncture. Mike.

Veneering Project Best Board To Use?

Hello, It is usual to veneer both sides of the board or it will cup. Also, the veneers need to be of similar thickness or the board will cup. Can you not use 1mm veneer and do both sides? Mike.

Hello, ^^^ This and it sounds as though you have too much blade protruding. Are you using a Record 044? Mike.

Anyone near Cowbridge, South Wales have a P/T I can use?!

Hello, I toyed with the idea of furniture kits (and traditional toy kits, latterly) but I fear the figures will not make it viable, either. The shelf is just shy of $100 And the cupboard $212 In cherry. I can't see many in people in Britain thinking that £212 would be a good price for...

planer thicknesser - table folding direction awkward

Hello, The image you posted isn't showing, but I'm assuming you have an Axminster White AT 106. If you think of it pragmatically, you can get the machine closer to a wall with the tables opening outward. Otherwise they are a PITA, but that is the way they are. However, I think you'll find a...

planer thicknesser - table folding direction awkward

Hello, Have you tried fitting the fence and bridge guard mounting gear on the opposite sides to the one they are on? The fittings will be identical, because the bits are not handed, so could be done the wrong way! Mike.

    jarrah wooden railway sleeper

Hello, I agree with Custard. You have to fit the project to the materials; it is a common and disastrous mistake, to have a project in mind and then try to make the materials conform to the idea you have. Wood won't be bullied into being what it doesn't want to. You have some wonderful timber...

UKW Secret Santa Photos Thread 2017

Hello, Sorry, posted my picture in the other thread, didn't realise there was a separate one for the photos. I got a really nice carved spoon in oak. Actually it is more like a ladle, quite a deep bowl. It was rather nicely done by Tyreman, who must have had a tough job with it, it is quite a...

    Secret Santa 2017?

Hello, Here is my most excellent present from Secret Santa. A carved oak spoon, which must have been a difficult job for Santa's elves, because it is a hard bit of oak. I particularly like the nicely shaped terminal. Thanks Santa. Mike.
