    riving knife on table saw

Hello, It is simply the fact that no one makes checks. If my saw takes more than 10 seconds to stop, will I go to the expense of getting a DC brake fitted when no one will check? Similarly foot operated e stops and keyed isolators are legally required, but which one man band has them fitted if...

    riving knife on table saw

Hello, That riving knife looks fine, your guard idea should work fine. It is infinitely better than a crown guard attached to the riving knife. Nice Startrite tablesaw, by the way. They actually run nice and smoothly, you should feel confident using it, and good guarding helps this. Mike.

    riving knife on table saw

Hello, The riving knife can be higher then the top of the tooth line and almost always is on as standard equipment on a TS. This has nothing to do with its effectiveness as a splitter, but is something to fix the crown guard to. This is the problem; people want to do partial thickness cuts so...

    riving knife on table saw

Hello, Yes, I know one man workshops generally don't always follow strict H and S rules, as they don't legally have to. The point I was trying to make ( failed to make) was that once I had been bitten, even when I had my one man shop, I tried to be much safer, even though no one was watching...

    riving knife on table saw

Hello, I got a kick back once, and swore it wouldn't happen to me again. This was a very long time ago, in my employers workshop, which was a signmaker's, rather than a proper cabinetmaker's shop. The tablesaw was shared with anyone who needed to make cuts, and as a consequence, people left...

Concealed drawer slides for flush faced dovetail drawers?

Hello, It seems to me your OH doesn't understand fine Cabinetmaking. Drawer slides are used by those who cannot make dovetailed drawers, nicely fitted into the drawer pockets, without rattling or rocking, with just a swoosh of air to cushion the closure. A bit of education might work, or else...

    Lancashire Pattern Tools.

Hello, When my dad got his, it must have been incomplete, or in need of some fettling. Your idea that the cutters were about 1 1/2in wide is correct, I remember ours had an uncut Stanley block plane blade fitted, I assume added by my dad. I remember the lever cap being sprayed matte black and I...

    Strengthening MDF edges/corners for jigs

Hello, I agree that sometimes we just need something to pattern route around for a short run, but then there is no real problem with edge splitting. Coating with West System epoxy might end up a wee bit more expensive than making from ply, though. However, when building jigs that are made from...

    riving knife on table saw

Hello, There should also be a guard connected to the riving knife. Neither should be removed without an alternative fitted, as they both constitute the first line of safety on the saw. No one here should advise you to remove them, as simply, if you have an accident, their advice may well have...

    Strengthening MDF edges/corners for jigs

Hello, I agree with Mr T. The whole point in a jig is that it will be a tool that will last for years and be used a lot. I don't think you can justify using MDF for them. By the time you mess about with dodges and fixes to try and overcome the shortfalls in the mdf, and perhaps get 10% longer...

How to check if a chisel (or angled cut) is square

Hello, I was going to post on the original thread about Ashley Iles chisels, but decided the OP was getting too much of a hard time already, but I got some unhandled chisels from the same and have to say, they are the best you can buy for the money. Needless to say, i didn't measure for square...

    Lancashire Pattern Tools.

Hello, All the years my dad and I owned our example, and not knowing what it actually was, we always referred to it as 'the shooting plane'. It seemed logical to us, that a plane with skewed iron projecting from the side should be used such. Now I know that it is a Lancashire pattern shoulder...

    Lancashire Pattern Tools.

Hello, Good grief, I actually had one, or rather my dad did and I remember using it as a shooting plane as a boy/young man. I can't for the life of me remember what happened to it. It was steel though and not brass with beech handle. I remember it still being around up until my dad popped off...

    Brick hammer

Hello, Aren't hammers case hardened low/medium carbon steel. Adzes (edge tools) should be high carbon steel. I think you'd be onto a hiding to nothing TBH unless your forge skills are good enough to introduce carbon into the hammer or forge weld some high carbon steel onto it. If they were...

Help with Axminster CCBB blade guides

Hello, Make a few more posts and then you can put up some pictures of your saw. It would help if we can see your particular saw so suggestions can be made. I'm not familiar with your saw and I suspect few others will be, but photos will help, bandsaws are fairly simple machines. Axminster...

How to check if a chisel (or angled cut) is square

Hello, Don't worry, I'm not going there, it was just a matter of semantics, and clarification. And we know ED65 uses a strop, so we know his comment about single stones is a throwaway one anyway. As far as square edges on chisels etc, I've never tested with a try square in my life...

    Lancashire Pattern Tools.

Hello, Taylor bros were the main tool dealers in Liverpool city centre, in London Road. I'm sure they were descendants of the maker of your plane, or perhaps it was bearing their dealers stamp of the same. I used to shop at there and some of the tools I still own were from there. Sadly Taylor...

How to check if a chisel (or angled cut) is square

Hello, Japanese 800 grit King stone is not measured using the same system as 800 diamond plate, which is likely American CAMI system. The Japanese 800 is a bit coarser, but neither fine enough for the finishing stage of honing. Mike.
