    Rebating with a combination plane

Hello, Custard, I've not been in the workshop to do some experimenting myself, I'll give my 405 a go tomorrow. But your Philly fillister ( nice plane BTW) has its cutter at a high bedding angle. Your combination does not. Is the difference in results mainly or entirely down to this. I'm sure...

    panel size question

Hello, I don't disagree at all. If I know my wood might be more likely to shrink than expand, because it is reasonably freshly bought from the timber merchants, I would remove less from the edges. I'm in the habit of making sure all wood I use is generally bone dry, perhaps I should have made...

    panel size question

Hello, Make the panels exact size in height and about 1/8 in (3 mm) narrower each side to allow seasonal movement. (Assuming the grain is orientated vertically) I find it better to make the panel an exact fit all round, then field the panels all round, if you are raising the panel, then remove...

    WIP I hope this works!

Hello, Thanks for the interest shown by everyone, I hope there is something different or useful here. The next stage is to cut the corresponding housings in the carcase sides. When I mage the jig for routing the slots in the panels, I cut a plywood strip that was the exact width of the panel...

Hello, Of course he does! :D Mike.

    Remote control air filter

Hello, It makes little difference. The filter is NOT filtering the dust that comes off the machine, the primary sources of extraction are for that, and dust masks. The filter keeps the air in the room cleaner. Once the machine is turned off, the extractor cut out and the dust mask removed the...

    Travel distance to workshop

Hello, I don't know where you are travelling from of travelling to, but I would think about where your customer base is likely to be. If you are making stuff for clients, then that usually means there is a certain level of affluence. Move away from the affluence, i.e. to a lower property value...

    Incra Router Table/Router Combo's - any advice?

Hello, Housings, (dados if you are going to go all American) are easily cut with a plunge router with a bush and a Tee Square type jig. I recently posted this in another forum. Easier to do than a router table, and costs almost nothing to make. The one shown is for doing quite long housings...

    WIP I hope this works!

Hello, Not got much done today either, child minding duties again, so here is a catch up from Wednesday's work. I made a simple screwed together router jig, to run some grooves in the end grain of the panels. I'm putting in 2 short grain, loose tongues in each end, to maximise the strength of...

    WIP I hope this works!

Hello, Your right, I didn't need to do the dust panels the same as the top and plinth, although because the bottom dust panel is above an open space, in theory it's underside could be visible, I thought it better not to use a secondary wood. Also and more importantly, I would have had to ensure...

    Router template question

Hello, I'm sure Makita produce guide bushes for their routers in sizes other than 30 mm. The Unibase is fine if you WANT to use Trend bushes, but investigate proprietary bushes first. Mike.

Fixing a broken brass saw bolt?

Hello, This is assuming that anyone would undertake these restorations without having an entire machine shop and forge at their disposal? These things are bound to happen! :D Mike.

    WIP I hope this works!

Hello, I'm intending to set the top flush with the sides. I thought the end grain on the upper edges might look, well different, at least, hopefully beautiful! There is a difficulty with a M&T frame for drawer support in a solid sided cabinet. The front rail can be fixed to the side, but the...

    1st Router advice

Hello, You are not far from me, I could give you a demo of some routers to show you some of the variants. I haven't actually got the Trend T5 I suggested, but I did have the Elu 96 it was based on, which is why I suggested it, back in the day. I'm not suggesting I'll give a full router...

Fixing a broken brass saw bolt?

Hello, No, soft solder wouldn't be strong enough. Hard solder is too high a MP to solder brass, without melting it. I would cut the stub off the head and drill a suitable sized hole in it. Square up the hole with a needle file and fit in some new brass rod, with a suitable square filed on the...

    WIP I hope this works!

Hello, I made no progress today on the cabinet, I had to take my little girl to see Bing Bunny and Flop in town! So I made a rough sketch of what I'm doing and also set the pieces I've done so far, together to hopefully make it bit clearer. The cabinet so far is lying on it's side. The...

    WIP I hope this works!

Hello, Yes, I left a little extra, but not much. When I ran the mitres on the spindle, I did not cut to a feather edge on the nose, as it is the nose that runs on the fence; you have to leave enough to bear on the fence. Consequently, when the mitres are glued, there are 2 tiny flats on the...

    1st Router advice

Hello, Fair enough, looks good. I have a similar Bosch one, but haven't got the plunge base yet. But then I'm not short of a plunge router or seven. I'm not sure what bad reviews the T5 gets that put Knotty Norm off one. They consistently get excellent reviews, they are quite well regarded...

    1st Router advice

Hello, I would strongly advise against a palm router. Get a plunge router for a first machine, it is most versatile. Something like a Trend T5 is a good size and reasonable cost for a pretty solid machine. It might be the only one you'll ever need. Mike.

    WIP I hope this works!

Hello, I'm not despondent, I just wasn't sure anyone was getting anything out if my whittering on! I suppose I should have posted a drawing of what I'm building, but I have nothing more than a thumbnail sketch of the top and front views. I know this goes against the grain with how making fine...
