    English Workbench

I should have shared what happened just before the end of the year. I cut both of the legs to accept the apron. This cut kinda messed with my head at first, due to the angles. In the videos comments Richard mentions that this joint has no benefit to being cut in a dovetail. Some of these...

    English Workbench

Things slowed down due to the new year and back to work. I was able to get a bit of time in during the start of the week at lunchtime to correct the upper rail, as well as rip and plane the planing brace. The planing brace is optional as I said. I don't plan on doing on hard dimensioning of...

    English Workbench

I started by using the tracksaw to cut the joints out, by setting the depth of cut to match the rail. I cut relief cuts after so I could chisel out the waste by splitting the wood. The nice thing about doing this is as soon as the line left by the saw is gone, you stop pairing back. Again this...

    English Workbench

In the video series, Richard builds the bench without a bench and minimal tools (hand tools only). I'm not doing that. In fact having my old bench is making this a lot easier. I used my bandsaw to rough cut the lap joints. The faces of the joints needed only very minimal clean up if all. The...

Which woodworking YouTube channels do you watch?

Thanks for this recommendation. Since you've posted this I've just hit episode 50 (of 144 or something?) and this is hands down one of the best series I've watched on Youtube. I'm not into boat building, nor did I know anything about it really but the woodworking is ace. The size of the...

    English Workbench

The wood has been resting for two weeks now. I'd prefer longer but need to get cracking. I started by cutting the legs to their final height. I'm aiming for a finished bench height of 1000mm which is 100mm more than my current bench height. This may be a bit high for some, but I have a...

    Trickle vent issue

Stupid question, but are they actually open? Reason I say this. Moved into a new house that had only been refurbished a few years prior, so everything was new. Trickle vents though had been installed the "correct" way up. In other words the bit that opens (the ugly part) facing the ceiling. The...

    English Workbench

This is based on the English Woodworker's plans. It was a user on here that got me to give this bench a second look. I did intend to build a Roubo but costs (both the wood and the hardware) made me re-consider. The main goal of this build is to provide a stable bench and plenty of surface area...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Coffee table for lounge. We moved in 2 years September, so this will be a nice addition finally. American white oak, Osmo poly X. Second time doing breadboard ends, had a bit of a disaster as one of the holes for drawboring broke, so lesson for next time is move them closer in so there's more...

    Woodworking Youtubers

Oh I actually watched this a few weeks back. I don't follow the bloke but this was a really good video, just decent entertainment. The bed turned out nice too.

    Your Favourite Tape Measure(s)

Stanley Fatmax 5m Metric only - I actually have a new one on it's way to me now. End snapped off somehow, but in the few years I've used it, been great. Real game changer for me was metric only - so much better/clearer.

    The $17 microscope

There's a load on Amazon for under a tenner. 30/60x, this should be good enough right? I'll tack one onto my next amazon order if so.

    The $17 microscope

Thanks, that's it. A loupe. I might give it a punt if I can get hold of one for a reasonable price. I don't have to worry about comparing with expensive methods, I already have diamond plates so the damage is already done. Just more curious than anything.

    The $17 microscope

It may have been here, or somewhere else that I heard of it, but would one of those jeweler type lenses work. Not sure what they're called, the things people use to inspect diamonds and stuff. Not fussed about taking photos, or the price, just don't want a device taking up space.

    Small Modern Shed Build

This was a product of the time - it was post lockdown, during the supply shortages. It was all I could get easily and it saved time in terms of not needing a mixer. If I was doing this now, when cement and the likes are easily available then you're right, mixing your own is the way forward.

    Small Modern Shed Build

I wasn't aware of this with my first shed but felt has a life expectancy of 5 years. Like clockwork, the fifth year it failed. Pretty much overnight. I came into the shed and was puzzled where the leak had come from. For the next couple of weeks I thought had solved it but then realized/saw the...

    Long Clamp Advice

So I've got a problem coming up in the next few weeks. Building a bookcase that exceeds my longest clamps. I've not actually done this yet but I have seen it on Youtube, can't remember the source but it seemed genius. You take a piece of scrap and use a couple of smaller clamps to clamp it...

Cen-Tec Systems Extraction Hose and 'Quick-Click' adaptors

Yeah, they are decent. A few youtubers I'd seen had them and after a show and tell I got myself a kit. The hose plus two adapters. A couple of years old now, bit well used but still working fine. Fits to all my tools (mix of brands, plus Festool). The only thing I struggle with is the vaccuum...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

My first bed build, for my daughter. An upgrade so we can use her toddler bed as cot for her brother/sister due July. We are planning a super king size build at some point, so this was my "test bed". Used some redwood that warped so badly we had bananas in the fruit bowel that were straighter...

    Another two chessboards.

Very nice. Regarding the Staunton board/pieces, they have rather strict rules and ways of building. Watched this cool video a while back on how they make the pieces.
