Ordering hand tools from EU sources

Did you pay German or UK VAT? I understand the arrangement is different for consignments of under and over £135.

    What's your Router Plane Style

There seems to be someone trying to re-manufacture the Preston 1399P router plane but it's on hold at the moment: http://www.teesvalleytoolworks.co.uk/ I think I read they're aiming for £150 as the price.

    What cost for European Ash

Is £1,400 their normal price? Or is it a "special" price they reserve for newbies? How can they stay in business charging several times more than other timber yards' prices? I think if you cancel on the basis of the distance selling rules and it's not a made to order item (the buyer has the...

    Vise With Adjustable Angle Jaws

I don't think the Emmert type of vice is of much use for instruments because, as you said, the vice needs to be on top of the bench so you can clamp the neck with the body or the other end of the neck supported on the bench.

    Vise With Adjustable Angle Jaws

At work, we have a green version of the Axminster vice mentioned in the second post, like this vice from Dictum: https://www.dictum.com/en/vices/patternmaker-s-vice-705755 except the black thingy part that goes under the vice and on top of the bench looks much thinner than our version. Works...

Turpentine versus White Spirit in beeswax furniture polish

Turpentine for me. Because white spirit smells awful.

I don't think they would believe it nowadays?

Penny for the Guy. Nowadays it would be Pound for the Guy. Now replaced by "trick or treat" and Halloween.

Woodworking on TV and on line.

It's great that more people are interested in woodwork, but these types of TV programmes are mainly human interest shows, with whatever the people are doing (cooking, makeovers etc) being secondary.

Bronze Miniature Hand Plane - What Use?

If a general auctioneer is going to give one dimension, it's not going to give its width but its longest dimension ie length.

Bronze Miniature Hand Plane - What Use?

I think it's 75mm in length not width. The proportions of the blade thickness and screw size don't look right if it's really 75mm in width. 75mm in width would make it roughly the same size as a 5 1/2 plane and that would be huge and very heavy.

    Grinder advice

I've never used a Tormek clone, only a Tormek at college and work. The college had a Viceroy Sharpedge grinder/sharpener as well.

    Grinder advice

I would go for a Tormek type wet grinder. No risk of overheating your blades, and no metal and abrasive particles flying everywhere as you would get with a dry drinder. Yes, they're slow if you're removing a lot of metal but you only have to do it once on a blade with a bad grind. I have some...

You guys must be heavy drinkers...

This thread is 2-in-1. Anyhow, the BBC does not use detection (if it exists) as evidence in court because they would have to reveal how it works! I gather the usual evidence is a signed confession otherwise it's the inspector's word against yours. The detector vans might have worked in theory...

The BBC inspection people are not police. They're just ordinary citizens.

Cheap digital, or quality dial ?

I prefer the vernier type, don't need batteries, lasts forever. I find dial calipers slow and fiddly to read.

    'Ow much???...

It's just a asking price, which the seller can set to whatever they like. And they're looking for best offers.

Things to while away the day watching on Youtube

Old Soviet motorbike rebuild, the video is extremely well made and very watchable, without annoying music, no in-yer-face presenter. And deserves every one of its 23million views.

    cap iron too short?

Maybe file off the metal from the cap iron at where the arrows points to, ie where it's touching the screw.

Anyone recognise this Maker - No 39 V Groove Chisel

It's probably not Henry Taylor as the markings are nothing like "Henry Taylor" or the acorn logo.
