    More garbage from China

Can you get a more skewed article than that? China has more than 4 times the population of the US and also produces most of the world's manufactured goods. The US per capita in fact produces several times more emissions than China. China has about 18% of the world's population. The US has...

    Clifton block plane price

As far as I can see, UK made Clifton bench planes are about 15% cheaper than the imported Lie Nielsen bench planes eg £324 vs £380 for 5 1/2, and the shoulder planes are about the same. Why is the Clifton block plane with adjustable mouth priced at £288 which is more than £100 more expensive...

    Just use the blade guard!

He recommends other people should use a blade guard then says he doesn't use one himself, and thinks it's safe to lean over and put his hands very near the blade and he's offering safety advice??!! :dunno: He's downplaying the purpose of a guard to justify why he doesn't use one.

    Just use the blade guard!

In the video in the first post, he says it's a motion he's done thousands of times, I presume he means putting his hand right next to the blade to move a piece of wood, not that he puts his hand there without looking.

    Just use the blade guard!

He blames the cut on losing concentration, mind being not focused, distraction blah blah. Not on the fact that there's an open and exposed high speed spinning blade! He'll probably carry on without a blade guard. 99.9% of videos on Youtube that show a tablesaw being used have unguarded blades...

challenge - using nitrous oxide litter

I think CO2 cartridges are aluminium. I once picked up a load of empty NO2/nitrous oxide/laughing gas cartridges dumped on a roadside, they seemed very strong so, yes, must be some kind of steel. I've always wondered what they could be used for. They're sold as "cream chargers" for whipping up...

    Random- how many sockets?

I've got 7 available at my own workbench at work: work lamp baby food warmer for hide glue hair dryer (for warming wood before gluing) usb charger rechargable battery charger (AA, AAA) soldering iron (only plugged in when using) workshop communal vacuum cleaner (only plugged in when using)...

    Warping of workpiece

I read the diagram with the elipse as the out of round bowl, 0.55mm too wide in the grain direction.

Ordering hand tools from EU sources

I think for goods entering the EU, the new VAT rules were originally meant to start on 1 Jan 2021 but are now going to start on 1 July 2021.

Ordering hand tools from EU sources

Haha, I missed that! But they should have amended the Order and Dispatch page as well as not everyone starts browsing on the home page.

Ordering hand tools from EU sources

https://www.fine-tools.com/versand.html says it's 12.90 euro to send to the UK but when you check out, UK is not in the list of destination countries. They should have a note saying they are not taking orders from the UK temporarily if that is the case.

    Your opinion about logos.

I'm against companies and products taking over a generic descriptive word or an ordinary unrelated word, eg Android, Chrome, Google (from googol) which are owned by Alphabet etc. More suggestions: Omniscribe Multiscribe Tooleyscribe

Plane sole wear, bronze vs iron

Perhaps I'm overthinking it. I've got a Record 9 1/2 and 18 and they both have noticeable sole wear but they're probably at least 50 years old. Sole wear probably isn't significant over the rest of my working life but I would still like to have a plane made from a harder wearing material if I'm...

Plane sole wear, bronze vs iron

How does a bronze plane compare with an iron plane with regards to sole wear? I'm thinking of block planes, where it will be used to plane a curved surface so the wear will be concentrated in the middle of the sole. I'm not too concerned about rust or weight. Current decent block planes all...

    Uses of box wood

Used for small parts in musical instruments, eg pegs. Small wooden planes. Wooden plane boxing. And of course old folding rulers.

Things to while away the day watching on Youtube

"Made in Sheffield 1954 This is a film made by Mr Ibberson when he was Master Cutler at Sheffield. It shows aspects of the Master Cutler’s Hall and the process of making hand-made cutlery in a small factory."

    Your opinion about logos.

"So on the scribe would be “scriber.co.uk”, “the-scriber.co.uk”, or “furniture-scriber.co.uk.”" I think they're too generic. It's like a screwdriver named as "The screwdriver", or a plane branded as "The Plane". I'd go with the usual naming convention: Company name-model name-product name, eg...

    Infill plane???

The Slater planes seem to have a different shape at the sides at the rear, at where the infill meets the body.

Ordering hand tools from EU sources

I suspect you paid VAT to Dictum on orders of under £135. Then Dictum is suppose to send it to the UK govt. On orders of over £135, it's the same arrangement as with non-EU countries (eg USA, Japan etc), you pay VAT to the UK govt when the item enters the UK.

Ordering hand tools from EU sources

Adding permanant frets to a cello seems dubious to me. I guessed it's going to be played at at rudimentry level. Nylon string frets would work (like on a viol), I would have thought, especially if the left hand stays in one position. There's also a temporary stick on fretboard available...
