Is there any differences in steels and bevel angles for tools that are pushed (plane irons and chisels pushed by hand) and tools that are struck with a mallet (chisels for mortising)? I meant to ask this upthread but I didn't phrase the question clearly.

I meant that Ray Iles makes thin and thick irons, at least for one retailer. I would phone and ask. Maybe you would have to wait for the next batch. I have phoned them before to check availability, possibly speaking to Mr Iles himself, and the irons I ordered online arrived in 2 days.

Isn't the problem is placing your hands so close to the blade? Even with a guard, you should keep your hands well away from the blade by using 2 push sticks.
