    Spear & Jackson's "Spearior 52"?

Spear and Jackson saws have quite ugly blocky handles, IMO. I think only the reallly old ones (19th C) have the curvy sculpted type. That's why I think they tend to go for a lower price, which is good if you just want one to use. But if you're going to get a tool, you might as well get one that...

    Stanley plastic handles

Hello all, I can't seem to find much info on this. When did Stanley (UK) start putting plastic handles on their planes and other tools (not icluding the lower range DIY types) when the handles were previously made of wood? I have a feeling it's not all that recent. I have a Stanley hand drill...

    NOT overheating when grinding

The only real grinding I've done so far has been on the coarser side of a combination oil stone. No risk of overheating but a lot of manual work compared with a machine! One was a wooden rebate plane laminated iron when I had to remove about 2-3mm to get rid off pitting on one of the corners...

    Overheated plane iron?

Hello all, Is this evidence of a plane iron that was overheated when it was grounded? The two dark bits on the bevel are depressions. I've tried scratching with a file but I'm not sure what I should be looking for, If I press fairly hard I can make very light scratches on the bevel.

Plane mouth crack, does it get worse with use?

If the crack doesn't get bigger with normal use, then I would prefer to use it as it is. I don't have any brazing kit so I couldn't do any brazing myself. And if the crack does eventually get bigger then as mentioned I could use it for spares. Ideally I think would be to stop using it and get it...

Wooden side rebate plane? And stuck wedge/iron.

Hello all, Is this a wooden side rebate plane? The maker is Archer, 45 Goodge Street. A quick search comes up with: The wedge and iron are stuck. I tried tapping the back of the body, it didn't help or maybe I didn't hit it hard enough. Then I tried banging down the iron, it moved down a...

Plane mouth crack, does it get worse with use?

Hello all, I've aquired a 1950s Record 5 1/2 plane that has one crack on the sole going from the front corner of the mouth to the side. Looking from the side, the crack doesn't go up on the side. When I try to bend the sole, I can see the crack get wider just a tiny bit, just barely noticeable...

Aldi has budget Woodworking gear on sale again.

I got a set of each type the last time they had them, works well enough. Last week Lidl had a set of 10 diamond needle files for £5, which are apparently good for doing the irons on wooden moulding planes.

    carboot bargains

I got these the other week for £2. 150mm combination stone. I only got it for the coarser side, it's a bit dished but cuts well enough. Marples gouge, ash handle I think. Pincers. File no handle. Brace. Quite rusty but seems almost no pitting underneath the rust.
