    Stanley 151R Too Much Chatter

I find with a round sole spokeshave, the angle and the pressure of it on the wood has to be just right otherwise it won't take a good shaving.

    Chisel Sharpener

At college, I use a Tormek for grinding and hone with fine ceramic diamond stones. And that is the easiest way for me. At home I only have oil stones; coarse for grinding (very slow), med and fine india then soft Arkansas for final honing.

    Spear & Jackson Chisel Logo

I've got this Spear & Jackson chisel, but what's the logo? Is it a seahorse on its side? One side is stamped with the logo and: "Spear & Jackson Sheffield" The other side has "England". SP and JA are just about readable on the remains of the handle label.

    Everest front door, £4,250?!!

I felt sick in the stomach after reading that. I'm thinking if the customer can cancel if the company made the first contact then surely the customer can also cancel if they contacted the company first. In fact the customer has the same rights in both situations. From...

    Everest front door, £4,250?!!

Oh yeah there's a %25 "discount" of £1,600 otherwise it would have been £5,900! On the back of the form/purchase agreement theres a 7 days "notice of the right to cancel notice" box, which means they can cancel even if they contacted Everest, I hope. And that's how it should be. The worrying...

    Everest front door, £4,250?!!

Hello all, A relative has just ordered a new front door from Everest, the price is £4,250, WTF??!!!! It's white PVCu with a small glass panel near the top, "sealed unit type: energy saver plus", also "cladding - roofline (front). I had a look at one of the DIY sheds and PVCu front...

    Bradson Pillar Drill

Hello all, I might be able to buy a Bradson No 14 pillar drill: Has anyone got any tips on what to look out for? I tried turning the handle but it stopped after moving a few mils, is there some sort of lock to stop it moving?

    Two tools - any idea?

I've got the top one. I've always thought it's a scriber for scracthing throught the blue ink you put on metal. Could be used for woodwork though, but the flat end has a double bevel, if it was specifically for woodwork I would have it thought it should have a single bevel.

What Contitutes Hand Made or Hand Crafted

I think real hand made stuff is only for the rich (or ordinary people who are spending a lot of money) and luxuary products. Although most luxuary products are priced according to their buyers and not on production costs. Actually I think there's isn't much real hand made commercial products at...

    stop finger print rust

Yep, baby oil. Cheap, safe for your skin, smells OK. But not creams though, as they're a mixture of water and oil. WD40 smells awful and engine oil's got all sorts of nasty additives.

    Backsaw making

Re folded back vs slotted back I would think that's down to a big manufacturer making lots of saws compared with a small maker who makes just a few. The big manufacturer has the heavy machinery to fold the backs whilst it would be easier for a smaller maker to saw a slot. It's like drop forging...

    no10 plane

They seem to go for quite a bit of money on Ebay, which could be only they are a lot less common than the no 4s and 5s. But what's the difference between a carriage maker's plane and a rebate plane? Is it just that a rebate plane's usually narrower?

    Japanese tools.

At about 0:43 seconds where he's glueing the sticks together, I think you can just about see banding going across the sticks.

Wooden side rebate plane? And stuck wedge/iron.

I did manage to get the wedge and iron out. I positioned the plane upside down on a surface with a gap for the wedge and use a piece of plastic to hit down on the tip of the wedge. I cut a V notch on the end of the plastic to match the wedge end. I first a used a bit of wood but it split at the...

The price some people charge - a personal rant!

"Hand made" and "hand crafted" are now so misused they've become meaningless. The only thing on the web site that shows anything hand crafted is the pic of someone using a drawknife with the boad in a vice. Since the main selling point of the product is they are hand crafted (hand sawn, hand...

    Record Rosewood Handles?

I've looked at that dating page. Assuming it's all original; the flat top iron and back iron makes it pre mid-1950s the rounded inner corner of brass wheel: 1954 or before lateral lever has rotating disc and no lettering: 1931 to 1939, BUT mine has a black satin finish, it's not paint but a...

    Record Rosewood Handles?

Does this Record No 4 1/2 have rosewood handles? The handle does have the dark stripes but the knob doesn't seem to and it's also darker overall. The knob looks like the ones on my later Record planes (1970s).

Wood, nominal sizes, imperial vs metric, what's going on?

Me too. It's using both that's cause of problems, just use metric. When I read web pages or forum posts with inches and feet, my eyes just glaze over and my brain start to hurt, so I just ignore or just skim through to get the gist, which means I generally avoid American web sites.

Here's a warning to idiots like me

OK, I've never used a table saw, and I will never use one unless I find a job where you have to use one. But a flat surface with a hole in it, and a completely exposed circular blade sticks out of it spinning at thousands of rpm and you push a piece of wood towards with your fingers??!! I don't...

Or you could use a mitre box.
