    Moulding plane iron too short?

Another way might to make a short replacment wedge so it doesn't stick out above the plane iron.

    In the Bleak Mid Bootsale

I don't think that lever cap is original to the plane. According to the Stanley plane dating web sites, the hole on the lever cap changed from a straight key hole shape to a 'kidney' shape in 1931. When Stanley started making planes in England, all the lever caps had the kidney hole, ie all...

    digital scales

I've also got the Lidl Silvercrest scales, bought a month or two ago at £9, weighs up to 5kg in 1g steps. They seem to work OK. The good thing about them is they take ordinary 2 x AA batteries, not button cells/9v batteries. The weird thing is there isn't an on/off switch, after you've used it...

    Mallets.

I meant the mallet glancing off the chisel is a consequence of the round design, not its purpose.

Ceramic stones; what are they exactly?

Aluminium oxide, as in man-made india stones? I thought it might be diamond or some high tech stuff. Maybe the high tech is in the ceramic binder.

    Mallets.

The first thing I made was a mallet from pine. OK pine's a bit soft and the bashing end does get dented but at leasted it won't damage wooden chisel handles or wooden planes at all. I would have thought the purpose of a round head is that it works in any direction. The disadvantage is of...

Ceramic stones; what are they exactly?

At college we have several stones: coarse diamond stone, the usual type with a grid of small circles on the top, medium steel block with diamond particles on the top, with one continous surface, and fine and extra fine ceramic stones which are actually Spyderco, like this pic But what exactly...

    [MASTER] info

I've finally managed to get the wedge out. The parallel iron is 4mm thick but it's a bit thinner (about 3.5mm) at the bevel. It has the Invicta prancing horse logo and "Nurse & Co, London". I've also got a Marples BB plane of this type, and apparently that did come from a school, its colour...

    Straightening a bent sawblade

I've got a bent Taylor Brothers saw. The back edge is curved in one direction but the toothed edge is bent one way then another. Is it possible to straighten this saw?

    [MASTER] info

As it happens just last week I bought a Master wooden technical jack plane, and I found the info in the thread mentioned above. Mine also has a '2' on the back and 'Master' on the front, and the dowel through the handle. There's a recess roughly cut out from the wedge, I'm not sure why...

best way to join picture frame mitres

I worked in picture framing a long time ago and the methods of joining were glue and pins through the sides, or glue and V shaped "nails" which were pressed into the back. The holes left by the pins were filled with filler.

How long for a Rob Cosman plane tuning?

It is a new £300 premium plane or a £5 boot fair plane? I guess the 5 min fettling was adjusting the lateral lever and setting the blade depth. I suppose it might be possible to flatten the sole and frog, shape the bottom of the back iron etc in 5 min but you'd need everything set up and ready...

    Unusual pliers

Aren't they shoe maker's pliers? Although they usual ones I've seen don't have the claw. The pliers bit is for pulling the leather around the wooden last and they you bang the small nails in with the hammer bit. Youtube has videos of this.

    Spear & Jackson Chisel Logo

I've seen another S&J chisel with the mermaid logo. It had the mermaid on one side but on the other it had "Spear & Jackson" and the S&J crown logo.

    Finish for percussion musical instrument

Can anybody reommend a finish for a percussion musical instrument; just basically wooden clappers. The wood should be very hard but I've only used a reddish wood that's not all that hard, I think it's sapele. So what I'm looking for is a varnish or oil type finish that would harden the wood.

    gutted

Is the current one in Soilhull the same as the one in the tool chest? One has a flat front end and the other has a protrusion. And the seller ID is different , although it could be same person. The thing to remeber with Ebay is that the final winning bid and the highest bidder's maximum are not...

    Elvicta bow saw blade attachment

I've got an Elvicta bow saw (300mm blade), on it is stamped "Elvicta, Elliott Lucas, Cannock England". How do I attach the blade to the handle? I've cut off a bit of metal from a chothes peg spring and it fits through the holes, will this work? How was it attached originally?

    Gouges and a Mortice Chisel

I prefer them with the original handles, unless the splits are bad enough to affect their use. Even then, I would try to repair the splits first.

Thanks. I've found this which shows the Mermaid in more detail: http://hyperkitten.com/pics/tools/fs/ar ... 10/s1.html
