    European vrs Japanese Planes query

Apart from pulling instead of pushing, the main difference I can see is that a Japanese plane has the blade nearer to the rear/heel of the plane, whereas the Western plane has the blade nearer to the toe/front. I've never used a Japanese plane but I've read that the toe is kept in contact with...

    Quenching small round 'bubble' marks?

Heating was done with a blow torch, then quenched in motor oil. Tempering was done in a kiln at 200 degrees. I don't know the temperature but did it by colour. Actually this was done at college and the colour was supposed to be "cherry red", as I've never done this before I just went by when...

    Quenching small round 'bubble' marks?

I made some blades from ground flat stock. After quenching in oil and tempering, some had a sort of round bubble marks on them. This one is 13mm wide and the marks are raised: This one is 11mm wide but the marks are much more faint and not raised: I've read that the marks are caused by...

    Chisel IDs

Hello all, Can anyone help with reading makers' names on some chisels I've got? First has only a single letter/symbol on it, like a sort of combined E and D, maybe it's an owner's mark: Next is I think Thos. Williamsons, Sheffield, although search on that name comes up blank: This one's...

    Ward: The World's Best Tools

I bought these two chisels recently. There's not much left of the sticker on the handles, but I think I can read: "W........ The World's Best Tools England" On one of the chisels, there is "Ward, Sheffield". The other one doesn't have anything apart from the sticker. Is this Ward...

    Sharpening Panel Saws

OK I understand the usual advice is that hardpoint saws canot be sharpened because the hardened teeth are are harder than a file, but chisels etc are harder than a file and they can be sharpened. So why isn't a hardpoint saw sharpened with eg a stone or a diamond file?

    Preserve plane handle trade label

I was looking to keep what's left of the original label/decal/sticker. A reproduction's fine for those who'd want one but it's not for me. I've varnished another one, from a 60s no 5 1/2. It's not bubbling and flaking off but it's cracked all over.

    Toothed blade shape

I've got a Record 080 scaper plane with a toothed blade with V shaped teeth: which I was going use to reduce some 3mm thick fiddleback maple to 1mm, only because I thought it would be quicker to use a toothed scraper followed by a normal plane then a final scrape. But I was told a toothing...

    Quangsheng / Dakota hand planes

What are the names on these planes sold by Rutlands and Workshop Heaven? Rutlands lists them as "Qiangsheng" brand planes, which is the name of the company/factory in China who makes them; Cixi City Qiangsheng Tools Co Ltd (or Qiangsheng Tools): http://www.qstools.com/ On their website...

    Preserve plane handle trade label

OK I've put some varnish on the label. Before I did that the existing varnish was flaking and peeling off by itself, the label was a bit better, maybe the label was holding the varnish together. After painting on some varnish (Chestnut Hard Wax Oil): After a couple of days: I've...

    Preserve plane handle trade label

Thanks for that. I think I'm going to brush on a coat of varnish over the top of the handle, just enough so the label won't flake off anymore and preserve it as it is now. For the rest of the handle I'm going to leave it and use it as it is. When enough of the varnish eventually comes off, I'll...

    Preserve plane handle trade label

I have a feeling the label will flake off by itself if I don't do something soon, it's getting a bit wrinkled now. And bits of the (quite thin) varnish is coming off and sticking to my hand every time I grab the handle. The only varnish I've got on me at the moment is a hard wax oil which I...

    Preserve plane handle trade label

Hello all, Has anyone got any ideas on how to preserve the trade label on a Record plane handle? I bought a mid 50s no 06 (full face frog type) recently with an almost completely intact label. After I cleaned off most of the rust (plane seems to be hardly used) and went to try it out, I might...
