    Underpricing yourself

I think that's outrageous. I hope you make clear that the deposit is non-refundable. I doubt many customers would sign up if they realise they would lose the deposit if for whatever reason you decide not to complete the job.

    Planecraft

I've never read it or even seen an actual copy but I thought Planecraft was published by Record.

    Octagonal handles

Hello all, I gather chisels and gouges with octagonal handles are quite old, as in 19th century old, and that they're often user made. So is it possible to date them, with the help of the markings and the shape of the metal part? For example, does a lack of "Sheffield" mean it's older than...

    Toothed Foreplane.

This is the first and only plane I've made: It's 60mm long, behind it in the pic is a Record 120 plane. More at https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/making-one-piece-wooden-plane-t78693.html

    Foreign 102 block plane

I've read that "Foreign" mean German made. The reason given is that Germany was less than popular after the World Wars.

Long mitre joint, without mitre table/saw.

Are people saying this cannot be done with hand tools? Why can't you just mark the wood, saw close to the line and then finish off with a plane? One problem is how to hold the workpiece, ideally it should be held at 45 degrees so that you can plane horizontally.

The choice of metric or imperial tool sizes.

I would choose one system and stick to it. If you use metric, on old tools, just measure its actual size in mm and work from there.

    Replacement Irons for Wooden Planes

I see replacement iron are available for the German Ulmia and ECE wooden planes, 26 to 36 Euros + P&P. http://fine-tools.com/hobele.htm

    Replacement Irons for Wooden Planes

I would also file the back iron square. As for newly made replacement irons for old wooden planes, that would defeat the point of old wooden planes for me, which is that they are cheap (99p to a few pounds, plus P&P if you can't collect in person) and plentiful and can be made to work even in...

    Why Leicas cost so much...

So, the camera body is "engineered" in Germany, the lenses are made in Japan but they go to Portugal for a 45 minute hand polish. I suppose the 45 min polish in Portugal won't add that much to the price of £2,600. Publicity stunt. http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/ph ... s-big-as-m

    My Hermes........My A***

I've had several items from My Hermes thrown over the back garden gate, landing on concrete, and faking my signature.. One was a Record no 71 router plane, cast iron, in a thin card box, no padding, cracked in two. Got refund from seller. Another was a brace, wraped in bubble wrap and brown...

    Wood ID, lignum vitae?

Hello all, This wood is fom a comb handle, about 10cm long, it's hard (can't dent it with a fingernail), light-medium brown with green herringbone stripes. My guess it's a lignum vitae substitute, namely Bulnesia sarmienti. I don't what's the common name for it in the UK but I've read Palo...

    Sash clamps

If you really want to save money, you can make something from wood, use wedges or twisted string (like in bow saw) to apply the pressure

Wood ID, looks like oak but is diffuse porous

Hello everyone, I got given a bit of scrap wood, apparently it's from a door or window frame. It's quite heavy, and looks a lot like oak, it's light brown and has prominent rays. But it's diffuse porous whereas oak is ring porous, and it's also finer grained. End grain, 20mm across: The...

    Wooden plane mouth metal insert

I've got a wooden jack plane that has a (user added) brass mouth insert attached with 2 brass screws. I need to flatten the sole, luckily the screws and brass plate came straight off. If I were to re-use the brass insert after I've flatten the sole, it would then stick out a bit. I would then...

Urggh...horrible. Less is definitely more here, in fact none would have been better.

    Spearpoint Marking Knife

Just my opinion, but I don't agree with destroying a nice old chisel like that, looks like boxwood handle and the older type of bevel with thin sides, assuming it was not already damaged beyond repair, it looks in good condition from the photo. Boot sales have plenty of abused plastic handled...
