    Making one-piece wooden plane

I have now made my second plane, it's a round bottomed thumb plane made from figured maple. Size is 45mm long x 17mm wide, blade width is 11mm. Marked out, chopping started: Holes drilled in the bottom: Holes also drill through the top, no photo. Chopping continued: Then I made a...

Taking your life in your hands

As long as you can adjust the saddle to the "correct" height, a frame size bigger that what is the current fashion is not really a problem. Yes you will touch the crossbar if you try to stand with both feet flat on the ground but it doesn't matter in practice. But a general rider will probably...

    Gloat thread

Some excellent gloats so far! OK I know a bullnose plane is not all that useful, but how about a Record 077A in practically unused condition, although there is a bit of rust on the plating, and it looks like the full length blade still has the factory bevel, for £4?

Axminster visit + overpriced chopping boards

Is ash a good wood for chopping boards, the big pores can't be ideal.

Taking your life in your hands

Re saddle height: having the "correct" saddle height will mean you actually can't touch both feet on the ground, but you can tip toe on one foot and you have to lean over a little bit. What you do instead is slide off the front of the saddle and straddle the crossbar (top tub), then you can put...

    Gloat thread

We need prices, otherwise how can you gloat? Come on, I think we're getting a bit too extravagant here with £160 planes, regardless of what the plane is! To bring it down to the proper gloat-able level, here's a Record 053 adjustable mouth spokeshave for the equivalent of £2 (from a joblot).

    Gloat thread

Those are nice buys, but IMO out of those only the 5 wooden planes+mallet+saw at £9.40 is possibly gloat-worthy, but if you collected then they're most defintely gloat-worthy :D My starter is a Record "war finish" no 7 for £15. As bought: Cleaned: I had to make a 60 mile round trip on my...

    Gloat thread

Are we allow to have a gloat thread? For the purposes of this thread, I think tools got from family and friends, whether free or paid for, should not be included. And you have to include a pic.

Hand plane - Rules of engagement

I think the (relatively) more recent planes have wider mouths, perhaps thicker blades will work better on those.

removing water base paint from tools

I've got a Record plane with what looks like thick gloss paint splashes on it. I used something hard like a screwdriver tip or the corner of an engineers square and pressed it into the paint which then cracked and most of it came off.

Hand plane - Rules of engagement

It seems this is a known problem when trying to use thicker blades on Stanley type planes. The answer is use a file and make the mouth bigger, and use a longer Y lever. http://forums.ukworkshop.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=279020

    Chisel IDs

    I. Sorby chisels seem to be quite common. I've got quite a few now, some with the punch logo and some without. Here's another chisel, actually a gouge, is it Thos Ibbotson & Co? If the letter above the T in STEEL is a T, then the number of characters to the right of it could match, ie...

Buck up, up and away (Chariot / thumb plane)

I was watching that first one a couple of hours ago when it was at about £500, I thought that was ridiculous enough! To pay that sort of money you've got to be either a dealer (prob USA) or so rich you don't know what to do with your money.

    More eBay madness

I know sniping software/websites place your one max bid for you in the last few seconds before the auction ends, but in this auction the bidder has has steadily increase their bid by small increments until they're the highest bidder, if this was done automatically by software, what is the point...

    More eBay madness

That is well above the going rate but what crazy bidding history! Great for the seller but idiotic from the buyer's point of view. That is why you should only make one bid 2 seconds before the auction ends. Click on bidder: v***i and look at their bids! Assuming they are genuine bids.

    Custom chisel job

If you mean make the blade shorter, there are nearly worn out chisels out there, ie been sharpened so much that's only a stubby bit of blade left. Which means you don't have to cut down your own chisels and use up their life prematurely.

Now what do I do - advice please

Even if the depth adjuster doesn't work, because of broken or missing parts, you can still make the plane work. You loosen the lever cap with lever flipped up about half way, then use a mallet to tap the blade, wooden plane style, then do up the lever cap. Although you might have to set the...

    HELP.......... PIBRO hand plane

I've got this Pibro block plane. It says "Pibro, Made in in Germany" on the blade, no other marks on the plane. 170mm long. The plane is similar to the Stanley 110, ie no adjusting mechanisms.
