    who/s tools do you favour

I generally just buy whatever comes along ( as long they don't have plastic handles), at the right price. The only preference I have over one maker instead of another maker of the same tool would be Record rather than Stanley. Which might be a bit odd because most record planes are direct copies...

    Ward paring chisel

I don't think the P has been added and as mentioned, an octagonal handle doesn't necessarily mean early 19th century or older. I've got this small Ward gouge, 200mm long. It only has "Ward" on it, nothing else: BE chisel, more recent, it has "Made in England" on the back in the same blocky...

Miniature Planes for Taking a Tiny Shaving Off

I'm not all that keen on the rounded over edges, esp on the mini no 4. I suspect they were made with machines, including powered sanders and polishers.

It looks like an 8 to me.

    The Only Handplane You Need?

So he's actually saying if you're going to have only one plane and you are mainly a power tool user, have this one; not that one plane is all that anybody needs. And anyway it's not one plane, it's one plane with several blades. Seems to me he's just trying to sell low angle jacks, which is a...

Paraffin blow lamp, hot enough for steel hardening?

I was just looking for a cheap way to harden steel. But parafin doesn't seem to be all that cheap, so maybe I'll try using charcoal.

Paraffin blow lamp, hot enough for steel hardening?

Hello all, How hot does a paraffin blow lamp get, will it reach the 800 degrees needed for hardening steel? It's the type where you have to pre-heat and pump up:

    Hand Planing Technique

Back on topic: I think for final finishing and planing down to an exact size and flatness, it best not to drag. Dragging would mean additional wear on blade and sole, maybe only a tiny bit, not enough to make any difference, I don't know. Also, dragging means less effort as you don't have to...

    Vice rear 'plate'

Thanks. If it's missing, does the vice still work?

    Vice rear 'plate'

I've noticed some vices don't have the 'plate' piece that joins the rear far ends of the screw and sliding bars. Eg, some random pics I found on the web: Also, the smaller vices don't seem seem to have them. On a bigger vice, if it's not there, is it missing? Does it make any difference?

    First boot-fair haul

I've given up on going to boot fairs as the ones near me are absolute crap. They charge an entry fee so I can go in and look at piles of old clothes and shoes etc. I've also got a "Colonel, Sheffield" and a EA Bell and Son chisels, but there doesn't seem to be any info on the web about them.

    Gloat thread

I wished I could get a Record no 8 for £17.50! Here's a Record 040 single arm small plough plane: Came from a job lot, so cost could be £3-5 depending how I split up the total price.

    Wooden planes

If you're talking specifically about moulding planes, I'm sure those are fine as a starter or just buy whatever turns up, but for wooden planes in general I would start with a jack and a coffin smoother. Then a trying plane.

Only if I had more money.

Pricing and marketing is an odd thing; something of good quality at a low price and some people turn their noses up, but the same thing at an inflated price and some will want it even if it's too much money for them. It seems sometimes the more expensive something is, the more people will want...

Update on the plane I posted earlier, it's stamped "H. Himstedt, Hamburg". . From bottom of page at: http://www.holzwerken.de/museum/herstel ... burg.phtml English translation:

    german planes

Well obviously a German horn handled scrub plane is German  but most of the posts are about the cutting action of a scrub plane vs a no 5 plane with the blade set wonky. Is a scrub plane specifically German? And I would say horn handled planes are continental rather than German.

Can someone rename this thread as most of it not actually about German planes...or split off the relevant posts to a new thread.

    Plough plane storage

If you don't want to make your own boxes, how about these packaging boxes for fruit? These are for cherries and are just the right length for chisels, and an assembled combo plane just about fits. They are quite sturdy and stackable. One is normal corrugated cardboard but the other one is a...
