Quartered and "Rift Sawn" Wood for Planes

It seems to contradict itself: wood with 45 degree grain and wood with 90 degree are both US "rift sawn lumber"! In summary from reading this forum, in the UK at least it's: 90 degrees (more or less) is quarter saw, 45 degrees (more or less) is rift sawn, less than about 35 is crown or plain...

Quartered and "Rift Sawn" Wood for Planes

This subject has come up before: topic74847.html It seems there's 2 ways to use these terms. One is to describe the method of sawing and the other is to describe the grain angle. So "quarter sawn" as in how it's sawn can give grain that's up to 45 degrees, but "quarter sawn" to mean the grain...

Quartered and "Rift Sawn" Wood for Planes

Which is "wrong", even says so itself! This is from a UK book: Through and through will give about one piece which is truly quarter sawn.

New Mistery Veritas Stuff: Custom Bevel Down Planes

It seems the only real "custom" bit is the frog angle, and even then you have to pay extra for angles other than the 3 angles offered. It's hardly "custom" is it?

    Traditional Stopped Chamfer Plane.

I don't have a chamfer plane, so I have to visualise how a chamfer plane works. I suppose one way is to keep one side of the V against the workpiece, which acts as the fence. You then take shavings, their thickness depends on how far the blade is advanced, the part of the plane the blade is set...

    Surviving Sheffield tool makers

I wonder who actually makes what though. "Sheffield Made S.J & J B Addis" chisels "Sheffield Made S.J & J.B Addis Gents Saw 16 TPI 6" Blade Brass Backed" Apparently "Made by SJ and JB Addis in Sheffield",

    Chisel IDs

Excellent, thanks! It seems "Zyto" was used as a brand of lathes by S. Tyzack & Sons as late as the 50s. There doesn't seem to be much info Zyto woodworking tools though. I have found this: http://swingleydev.com/archive/get.php? ... t_thread=1 which has this transfer on a moulding plane...

    Chisel IDs

Here's a couple more. The first one is, I think, Hardy Pick Ltd, Sheffield, England, which seems to be a bit obsure, maybe it's http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Hardypick The second one is a 9mm in-canel gouge with a distinctive logo on the back, is that a T...R...something then O. To the...

    Moulding plane repair

William J. Armour, in "Work, The Illustrated Journal for Mechanics" (1898), wrote that boxing was glued, but didn't give any more details: I presume at that time, it would have been hide glue. http://www.handplane.com/32/practical-plane-making-1/

Black stains/marks on wood left outside in rain

Hello all, I've got a rubber wood table top that I found left on the pavement, propped up against a wall. I think it's been rained on at least twice. The unfinished parts where water has collected have got blacks marks. I wiped it with a damp cloth and the cloth got black, the cloth washes...

    56 planes on ebay (finsihed)

Sure, sellers (and Ebay) want to get the highest price for their items. That's fine, they should use Ebay or other auction sites. But I suppose some members object to sellers using the forum for free advertising. And driving up prices is no "help" to buyers.

    Channel four now.

Typical cr*p mainstream TV. The actual stuff about history, making the bike etc is less than about 15 min of the programme, the rest is just waffle. Weird presenting style with him seemingly talking to himself or some person off-camera at the same time.

    Ebay buyer requirement

I've had another bid rejected today, again it's because the buyer needs a (linked) Paypal account. The seller even put collection in person as a payment option. This time I'm not as annoyed as before as I was outbid anyway. I haven't sold on Ebay before, but I suspect when sellers do their...

    The Woodie Slope Steepens!

I've wondering about that. I haven't used a chamfering plane before but from what I've read, you only set the blade depth once. But if you've set it for a wide chamfer, how do you take thin shavings?

    56 planes on ebay (finsihed)

Lots of bids but there were only about 5 bidders who bid more that £10 though. And one of those only bid £32, the next highest was £75. I think there's a Record T5, which goes for a fair amount. And a Record router plane, probably with only one cutter. There's also a no 7, but it doesn't seem...

    56 planes on ebay (finsihed)

Re the 56 planes, they need a lot of work! If the buyer's not collecting, I wonder how much it would cost to send a courier? It's got to weigh at least 50kg, maybe nearer 100kg.
