    Wooden plane making, marking out

Armour used "butment" but "abutment" seems to be the current term people use. According to OED: Butment Abutment I'll sneak in a couple of pics of my latest plane!

    Wooden plane making, marking out

Hello all, This is how I've been marking out for making wooden planes. I've worked this out from the WJ Armour article on plane making and the Charles Hayward book on making tools. http://www.handplane.com/32/practical-plane-making-1/ I have used the terms used by Armour. I've done it...

    what are CLIFTON doing.....

Just from looking at photos, I think I prefer the grey version. That green looks a bit garish to me, whereas the grey looks more subtle, even refined, and more in keeping with old woodworking tools, which are mostly shades of brown (wood) and grey (metal). Also the green one looks more glossy...

    Bedding Plane Irons

I have to admit I haven't used any marking on the planes I've made so far. I find checking by eye and using the iron for the final paring of the bed good enough, for the iron to be held by the wedge. The only thing is if the bed is not perfectly flat, that might affect the iron adjustment...

    Finding staff

I think the problem is employers want people who are already doing the job, ie fully skilled and experienced, but they are already have a job! And they're not going to change job unless pay and working conditions are better, or move to a new area. The number of people already doing the job but...

Football - where is it going?

No one would be bothered if their wages came only and directly from paying fans. But even if you don't watch football, you're probably paying for it; by buying from a company that sponsors football. And also TV companies pay huge amounts to football, and that money comes from consumers who pay...

Superglue going solid inside its tube

Hello, I've had superglue drying out/going solid inside the tube. Someone once told me that superglue actually only dries/sets in the absence of air, is that correct?

    Denatured alcohol

I bought some (purple) meths a few months age but now they've gone completely colourless. I would have thought a common use for industrial alcohol is for making french polish, so maybe that's a good enough reason.

Football - where is it going?

I wouldn't either if all the money that went into football came directly from football fans paying for their tickets. But even if you don't watch football, you're probably paying for it; by buying from a company that sponsors football. And also TV companies pay huge amounts to football, and...

    Home made threadless vice

"Wood and Woodworking Tools: A Handbook" (1989) by E.G. Richards, Robert Plumptre, Stuart Wilson, The rest of the books covers the normal type hand tools. There's a chapter on timber conversion and storage. It also has details on various human powered lathes, eg:

    Home made threadless vice

Thanks for all the suggestions. How about a vice made with the back end of a bicycle? Not that I'm planning to make it, it's just something I saw in a book.

    LEE VALLEY - VERITAS

Hello, Did the £203.50 include VAT? Because apparently you have to pay VAT on goods bought from outside the EU if they cost more than £15. From http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/post/buying.htm : If you did pay VAT, then the price difference is huge.

    Making one-piece wooden plane

Yes, a piercing saw would work. I cut out the piece of boxwood, planed the edges straight, then marked around it on the sole. I can't remember but I don't think I used a router plane, even the Stanley/Record small one is going to be too big. I think I used a knife and a chisel, the recess...

Quartered and "Rift Sawn" Wood for Planes

Good effort for a first one! The photo of the sole looks good. I used a plane for the chamfers along the plane, and a chisel or knife for the vertical ones. In my experience, small planes are harder to make than bigger ones.

    Making one-piece wooden plane

Yes, afaik, ground flat stock, also called gauge plate, is always 01. I've made a few more now. Again the wood is maple, offcuts from instrument making. Length is 55mm, shorter than my thumb. width is18mm , blade is 11mm. Marked out and paring started, mallet not used. Mouth started...

    Home made threadless vice

The reason for a threadless vice is lighter weight. I want to make a work bench that quickly knocks down, using wedges. It would taken apart after every session or at least at the end of the day. The top would be a separate piece and I though having an extra lump of 10 to 20 kg of metal sticking...

    Home made threadless vice

I'm interested in making a wooden vice, threadless if possible, for the work bench I'm going to build. I found this drawing of sort of leg vice that seem to use a wedge and a cam: It's from http://benchnotes.com/Wedge%20Clamps/wedge_clamps.htm It said the weighted wedge is operated by a...

Quartered and "Rift Sawn" Wood for Planes

In the UK at least, old wooden planes are plentiful and cheap, even the ones that are not in the best of condition can be made to work, eg an insert in the sole to close up the mouth etc. So I personally wouldn't bother to make wooden planes that I can easily get for a low price, like the bench...

    Recommend a courier.

I've had the exact same thing. Two packages survived, although one of them had something loose which I don't know if it was caused by the fall or not, still got a refund. One was a route plane which broke, caused by the fall and very poor packaging. In all cases they faked my signature. And...
