    Pronunciations?

How do you pronounce "chamfer"? In college classes, the teachers say sham-fer, but the Oxford Dictionary of English says it with the "ch" like in "champion". OK I know "dado" is actually pronounced "housing" but what about "dado" as in "dado rail"? I've never heard anyone say it in...

    Work like a Roman?

I was browsing the Internet Archive for woodworking books when I saw "Roman Woodworking" by Roger Bradley Ulrich: https://archive.org/details/RomanWoodworking Unfortunately, the illustrations are not included on the version on that website.

    Making one-piece wooden plane

I didn't take any photos for the next bit which was to saw the abutments with a piercing saw and then tidy up with a chisel. I then started on the wedge, here's the plane assembled so far, 20p for scale. Ends rounded, surfaces cleaned up, all off the blade. Started on finishing the wedge...

    Making one-piece wooden plane

For a thumb plane, I would say something like 1-2mm. For a bigger plane, maybe 2-4mm, it's not critical. Here's the latest plane I've made. The wood is a wedged shaped bit of scrap maple, the grain and growth rings are all "wrong" but it doesn't matter, I'm just trying out a different plane...

    How many chisels and gouges?

My main interest is musical instrument making at the moment but I'm interested in all sorts of woodwork with hand tools. Here's a few more. Total so far is 98 chisels and gouges and 5 turning tools, or 103 including turning tools.

Plastic handles smell of vinegar!!Any Chemistry experts?

I've read that the orange and yellow Marples splitproof chisel handles are made from cellulose acetate butyrate. Mine (about 20 years old) haven't started to degrade yet, they're still hard and smooth. I've found that they're really smelly when they're kept in a tool box, I don't know if the box...

    Which gouge?

Yeah I forgot to say it should be an out canel gouge, ie the bevel is on the outside of the curve. You can sharpen it on normal bench stones but you need something else to take off the wire edge, like a slip stone or fine sandpaper wrapped around a dowel. You could also use the edge of a bench...

    Which gouge?

It would depend on the shape and size of the hollow you want to make. A medium width and sweep (shape of curve) straight gouge should be OK to start with, eg: http://www.mehr-als-werkzeug.de/product ... -35-mm.htm sweep 8, 13mm wide or sweep 9 16mm.

    How many chisels and gouges?

I just wanted to keep a record, so that i know what I've got. And I do buy them to use. I really do like old chisels though, and the good thing about them is they are relatively cheap and easy to store (as mentioned). I just buy them when and where I can, for the right price of course. Most...

Disston D8 thumbhole copy clean-up WIP

I hope so, but I've never tried to straighten a saw before, it was less than £1 though, so might give it a bash using some web sources.

    How many chisels and gouges?

I just think bevel edge are less common amongst older chisels, so that's what I have.

    How many chisels and gouges?

Hello all, No, I'm not asking how many chisels and gouges do you need, that would be silly  . It's how many have I got, so far. I've done a count of about half of my chisels and gouges and it's come to 71. All bought within the last 18 months.

    Ebay P&P

I think Ebay changed the postage cost info on completed listings. Before the change, an individual completed listing still shows the postage price but now it says "varies" and "Postage cost can't be calculated. Please enter a valid postcode." Or "Will post to United Kingdom. Read item...

Disston D8 thumbhole copy clean-up WIP

Yes, it's etched with "Taylor Brothers". Unfortunately the saw is not straight. I would think that second teir saws having "Warranted Superior" would only be the case when the saw doesn't have any other branding, otherwise it doesn't really make sense, and probably only applies to USA saws.

    Dating Stanley bench planes

I get the impression from various forum posts that the plastic handles go back quite a bit (in human years if not in tool years), maybe the 80s. I wouldn't automatically dismiss them as being no good. I have a UK Stanley no 4 with a silver colour adjuster and wooden handles, I think a forum...

Disston D8 thumbhole copy clean-up WIP

I've got a Taylor Brothers saw with a similar handle. At first I though it was a dark wood but it does look like it's stained/varnished beech. I would also go for the preserving approach, clean lightly with meths or turps, then oil or wax. Could also add back some colour where bare wood is...

    Dating Stanley bench planes

All the online dating guides are for US made planes, and then they're only for planes older than about 1950s-60s. I gather the G12-xxx planes with plastic handles are the last UK made ones.
