WIP: wooden violin maker's thumb planes

I've essentially finished one plane out of the nine; rounding off the ends, shaping the top, finishing off the wedge, rounding the sole. The blade is unhardened and needs some finishing though. Sole before being made convex: Line drawn for the top profile, then chisels and a gouge used to...

    How many chisels and gouges?

I think some of the tools are shoe making tools;there are some glazing irons, I think.

    How many chisels and gouges?

I'm picky about price as well. I recently passed up on several nice small gouges from a market stall, I offered £3 each but they wanted £5. But I prefer not to buy from traders anyway. My latest acquisitions: from a £3 joblot (spot the chisels!): came these two, a small Thos Ibbotson & Co...

Recommendations for a new set of chisels

I suppose it's a reason, if you need a reason. But mismatched chisels (handles) have the advantage of them being easier to identify amongst your tools simply because they're all different.

Is it possible to make the mouth smaller?

One way is to put something between the frog and blade, like a thin sheet of metal, which in effect makes the blade thicker.

    How many chisels and gouges?

Sure, we all like old tools here! I got these 3 some time ago. I knew I had a Spear & Jackson chisel somewhere and I haven't listed yet, and now I've managed to find it together with a Herring Brothers gouge and Marples BE chisel. Total 211. The S&J has a mermaid logo on it.

    Plough plane storage

I bought this 043 and it came with a user made box. It's got a fitting to hold the plane still but still allows it to be quickly taken out.

Best keep on topic, I think. Start a new thread if you want advice about sharpening or stones. Or search the forum, plenty of posts already posted!

    Non-selling Ebay seller

On Ebay's "Seller doesn't want to sell" help page is this: Then there 2 action you can take: If you choose report the seller, you have to to phone Ebay (although it's a 0800 number). It seems an item being broken or no longer available are valid reasons not to sell. So I wouldn't expect...

    newbie needs to understand....

It might seem surprising but it's true! Unless you send your tools away to be sharpened by someone else, you will have to learn to sharpen eventually. If you you go on a formal woodworking course at college or do an apprenticeship, one of the first things you learn is sharpening. As for tools...

How long is a No 8 plane

I've seen at least one cut down plane before on Ebay and I'm sure they're not uncommon. A no 8 is 610mm or 24 in and it's also wider than a 4 1/2, 5 1/2, 6 and 7.

    Plough Plane Blades

I just had a look at the Record plough plane instructions and it said the factory bevel was 35 degrees and the user should hone that bevel as a single bevel rather than use a secondary honing bevel as on bench planes. It said that was easier to maintain.

    Non-selling Ebay seller

With auctions where I've paid by Paypal (either with my credit card processed by Paypal or from my Paypal account) and the seller is supposed to send by post, luckily I haven't any seller claim they have sent it but didn't arrive, although I've had items damaged by the courier (chucking it over...

WIP: wooden violin maker's thumb planes

Thanks for all the comments. I made the blades from 1.5mm thick ground flat stock (gauge plate). The wood are all maple off cuts from the back and neck of the wood (quarter sawn) used in violin making but of course other fine grained and hard wood can be used. The planes in this lot are all...

    Non-selling Ebay seller

I've won a few a few Ebay auction bargains where the seller didn't want to sell. I've given them a neg feedback which they deserve (gets remove after 1 year anyway), but are there any other consequences? Does Ebay do anything else to deter it? Eg, suspend their account, put their listings lower...

    Treatex hard wax oil

I use genyouwin turpentine for thinning. Turps sub smells as bad as white spirit.

WIP: wooden violin maker's thumb planes

I have done a bit more, all marked out and mouths drilled. This one I've started to chisel out. One with the escapement finished.

    Treatex hard wax oil

I've got the Chestnut brand version and it says use white spirit or turps to thin it, either for the first coat or if it's gone thick in the container. I've used turps and it it seems OK.

    Chisel IDs

Another long shot. The top one I've worked out, answer to follow after the photo (if you want to want to guess). The bottom has CAST STEEL in the second line but the rest of it is hard to read. Possibly 12 letters, starts with ISA...ends with MARDS? It's Geo P. Preston & Sons, Sheffield.

    How many chisels and gouges?

My latest batch of 10 gouges, total 208. Les common brands are Thomas Firth & Sons (steel maker) and George P Preston, Sheffield (tool dealer). Largest one at the bottom of the pic is unreadable but I can just about make out "Cast Steel". These are in a much cleaner condition than the last lot:
