Record vice 52D Quick release parts missing

I would think if you've got the half nut and part P, you could make it work as a non qr vice by fixing it so the half nut stays in place.

Wooden router plane - made or adapted?

I think that would suggest it was made new, not a modified smoothing plane. I would guess user made, because the design would be easier to make than the type where the wedge and blade is completely surrounded. On a wooden plane, the width of front of the abutments gets narrower going from the...

    Counterfeit and 'Knock-off' Tools

Lie Nielson makes copies of the Preston/Record shoulder planes, do they complain about Clifton or Woodriver making them?

    Counterfeit and 'Knock-off' Tools

Example: looks like to me a straight copy of the Stanley 702 aluminium clamp on vice. http://www.leevalley.com/US/Wood/page.a ... 41665&ap=1 Does that apply when it's a copy of a copy? What if another company makes another copy of the Stanley 702 vice? Seems to me some people are saying...

Taking Advantage of the Current Euro Weakness

I almost never buy tools new, but I ordered a few things from Dieter Schmid Fine Tools. Dictum had the same at the same price but I went with Fine Tools because it's got a better website with lots of info about the tools. There was thread on how it's much cheaper to order direct from...

WIP: wooden violin maker's thumb planes

Continue from previous post; waste on one side removed: I've finished making a toothed blade, here taking some test shavings, but the blade serrations are a bit too shallow:

WIP: wooden violin maker's thumb planes

Thanks. Making the blades is just cutting thickish sheet steel using a hacksaw and then filing them to clean up, not much to see! Here's some pics of sawing the abutments (recesses/mortices for the wedge). Not shown is my thumb holding the workpiece down, I could have and sometimes do use a...

Taking Advantage of the Current Euro Weakness

I'm looking at Fine Tools and have got a few items in the basket, I'm certain there's no import taxes/duty as Germany's in the EU.

    Unusual Chariot on ebay

It looks to me like the screwed bit of wood acts as the cross "pin/bridge", ie it goes in front of the wedge, and it's not the wedge itself. I'd expect the wedge and blade would come out by the usual tapping method.

    Counterfeit and 'Knock-off' Tools

I had a quick look at that US forum thread linked to earlier, I get the sense it's a case of "it's OK if we copy, but if others do it then it's fakes, piracy etc". I guess in the UK there's less of that attitude in regards to woodworking tools, given that most of Record's planes were exact...

    Another unusual sharpening method.

I do my out-cannel gouge sideways, stone in the usual position and the gouge pointing left and right, I find it easier to keep a constant angle so the bevel ends up flat.

    Counterfeit and 'Knock-off' Tools

Hammer with a short handle? Stanley bedrock planes, first made in the 19th C and whose patent has expired for more than 100 years? Does anyone accuse Clifton of making fakes or copies? Marking gauges with a cutting wheel? I just saw one in the 1925 Melhuish catalogue. BTW a product which is a...

    Beech wood processing

I'm not sure about that, if you've got the right saw and abled to put in a bit of effort, why not?

    Lidl LED lamp

I bought a couple of these, the one with the translucent surround. The best things are it's cheap (£4,) and the bulb is separate and replacablee although they seem to cost as much or more than £4. The big problem with it is the neck is just too short! If you clip it to a table or work surface...

    Swan neck chisel sharpening

I've got 2 lock mortice chisels, they're longer than normals chisels. As bought, they both have a bevel on the inside of the curve.
