That looks very clean and in excellent condition!

Acceptable condition of second hand chisels?

I would think that condition is normal for second hand chisels; used and sharpened a few times, then left in a shed/garage. As for whether they're "little used" or "need sharpening", both could be accurate if they have most of their original length and "sharpening" includes both grinding and...

    Veritas planes

If you click on http://www.axminster.co.uk/veritas-no-4 ... ing-planes it first shows: From £114.96, was from £314.96, low price save 63%. But when you click on blade options, both the 01 and A2 versions are temp out of stock, at £200 and £300 respectively. The no 4 with V-11 at £114 seems to...

    wooden plane info please

Hello, The wood is beech, quarter sawn with the medullary rays verticals which gives the nice flecks on the side of the plane.

I love Classic British wooden Planes

Those look like much longer planes. From what I've seen, a more typical British 560mm/22inch plane would have the mouth about a third front the front and the handle about halfway between the mouth and rear of the plane, eg:

    Price differences

Postage is only about 10 Euro, and there's also a non-sterling fee on the credit card, about 2.75%. But it still works out much much cheaper. I recently bought some stuff from Dieter Schmid Fine Tools, took a week to arrive. The order was only for about £50, so the P&P wiped out some of the...

    Daft ebay bidding

I think the listing is misleading, not intentional I think. Of course if you read every word then you know what you are getting but if you have a quick look it does look like the auction's for 4 jaws, ie 4 sets of jaws. The main photo shows the box which has 4 jaws on it. The first paragraph...

    Non-selling Ebay seller

I've just bought a book from one of those Ebay booksellers with a huge turnover (62,000 feedbacks in the last month alone). It was a Buy it Now at what seems to be the going rate for a common book; £3 inc P&P. However the book is an out of print obscure woodwork tool book that has been...

Stanley 62 Low Angle Sweetheart, anyone bought one recently

I agree. Forums are not just for idle chit chat, they're also a good source of information, that's why people should start a new thread or post on an existing one if they're not going to stay on topic. Another annoyance is crap thread titles like "What's this?".

    What a beautiful workshop.

Workshop?!! I'd gladly live in a small(ish) house like that! As a house, it's not even that small!

    Non-selling Ebay seller

I think there's a couple of reasons why sellers start at a low price but don't accept their obligations if the final price is not to their liking. Lower Ebay fees, and to attract more bidders ie higher final price. As you say, if a seller doesn't want to sell for 99p, then don't start the...

    Non-selling Ebay seller

I've just had another seller who didn't want to sell. It's very simple, after the auction's ended, they just clicked "cancel" without having to contact the buyer first, that's it! They probably had to choose a "valid" reason, like item not available or item broken. Of course the seller will get...

Wooden router plane - made or adapted?

Salaman's has this drawing of a user made one, which is sort of similar to the one being discussed.

Ever considered making a repro dining chair? How about 10?

Without knowing how long it took to make and the price, so what? I'm sure lots of people, if not most people, are capable of doing it. The crucial thing is how long does it take. If he made these 10 chairs in a few days, that would be good work. And in any case they're not "hand made", he...

    Any advice on hand thicknessing?

I would have thought unless you saw the timber very close to the final size (best to leave more to allow for error when sawing by hand), using only one plane is not really efficient, presumably you'd have the blade ground and honed straight across with rounded corners, ie no camber, or a very...

Wooden router plane - made or adapted?

The shallowness of the slot doesn't rule out a modification if the donor plane had a single iron, assuming a single iron plane won't have a slot on the bed.

WIP: wooden violin maker's thumb planes

Thanks! Most of the time I hold it in my hand or have it on a surface against a stop, like a rebate on a piece of wood. I think the only time when I've used a vice (after the 'blanks' have been cut) is for the hole drilling. I'm not sure using a longer stick would offer any advantages, but I...

    Charcoal barbecue for heating metal

To answer my own question, it seems you can just hold a hair dryer over the charcoal, eg this vid at about 6 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zULRWT5eLgM But having the air enter from underneath works better, eg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR2bxN9nJ20

WIP: wooden violin maker's thumb planes

I've finished 7 of the batch, although the blades still need hardening and tempering. I've found that using a file for rounding the plane and wedge is a lot easier than using a gouge.
