20% off over £20 on ebay if using Paypal until midnight 15/6

From reading another forum, it seems you can still get the discount but you have to contact Ebay by phone or online "live chat" and you have to pay the full price when you make the purchase and Ebay will refund the 20% after 14 days. I suspect that's just to put people off, even if they really...

    Karl Holtey

There are lots of different types of "art". There's applied art (overlaps with craft), performing arts, etc. What most people mean by "art" is actually "fine art" ie traditionally painting, sculpture etc. By definition a woodworking tool is not fine art. The art market is something entirely...

Can I cut a block plane iron down to fit ?

Hardened steel can be cut, but not with a hacksaw! I think you have to grind it, a cutting disc is effectively a very narrow grinding wheel. Yes you can soften the blade so you can use a hacksaw and then reheat, quench and temper , but I think if you're going to do that, you might as well start...

20% off over £20 on ebay if using Paypal until midnight 15/6

Thanks for this. I was looking for things to buy and finally managed to get several tool rolls in my basket and then went apply the code but got: :x Maybe they stopped it because it got too popular or I hope it's a temp glitch.

    Moseley chisel trademark?

Thanks. In the 1938 Marples catalogue, there isn't a trademark for John Moseley & Son but there is for Thomas Ibbottson, and of course there's one for Marples. That could be evidence that John Moseley & Son has never had a trademark, or at least not a registered one. Or it could be the...

    Moseley chisel trademark?

Hello, I've just bought this small chisel, width is just over 2mm (I don't know what's that in inches). It's stamped CAST STEEL on one side and MOSELEY on the other. After the "Moseley" there's a trademark, is it a trident, or maybe an anchor? Or a crown? The bolster has the shape of a...

    Does better steel get sharper?

There's a How It's Made video of chisels being hammer forged, and those were the very ordinary plastic handled socket type chisels. And Ashley Isles certainly hammer forge and I suspect others like Narex and Pfeil as well. I would guess whilst chisels with a bolster or socket are always hammer...

probably the most expensive shoulder plane in the world?

Tip for searching ridiculous prices is to click on the "completed listings" box on the left. Then click used condition to weed out the out of stock new items, then sort highest price first and you will see there are very few items sold, especially the Buy it Now ones. Even then the bidding...

probably the most expensive shoulder plane in the world?

Maybe, if it sold at that price. Otherwise it's just an asking price.

    The Anarchist's Tool Chest - A Review

I've already said why I won't: I wouldn't buy or even read this book for several reasons. First is the title. Second is if I'm paying for a new book then I would like it to include metric measurements. Third is, as mentioned, old books by Charles Hayward, Robert Wearing etc will have all the...

    Then why the title?

    The Anarchist's Tool Chest - A Review

All the more reason to object to the title! Why not called it "The Sustainable Tool Chest", "The Anti-Consumerist's Tool Chest" or "The Anti-Capitalist's Tool Chest" if that's what he really means, instead of misusing a word just to grab attention.

    An Odd Footprint

I've got a few very battered ones with the black and yellow painted handles, with the distinctive embossed ferrules. I've found some photos of various Footprint chisels on the web: More info at http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Thomas_R._Ellin

    The Anarchist's Tool Chest - A Review

I've glanced over lots of workbench builds on the web and most of them, certainly all the USA ones (therefore all the ones connected with Fine Woodworking magazine), were completely made with power tools and machines!

Very scary view of the next terrorist weapon

Very scary view of the next imperialist weapon: Factory made quad copter drone with 100 round machine gun that self destructs. Spray your bullets, then blow up the remaining enemy all from a distance, totally untraceable.

    timber merchants with no saw

When they say they don't have saws "because of health and safety", what they really mean is they can't be bothered to implement and follow all the H&S rules, ie, all the stuff in the hse.gov.uk link: The following is just the start:
