Manual pillar drill doesn't go up and down

Thanks for the link, I can see 3 drills in that thread which are exactly like mine.

Manual pillar drill doesn't go up and down

Thanks, it's working now! When I turned the handle before, the top wheel turned at the same time. Then I loosened the wheel by holding the handle with one hand and turning the wheel with the other. Now the the main shaft and chuck goes up and down when I turn the handle but the wheel doesn't turn.

Manual pillar drill doesn't go up and down

Hello all, I've just bought a small hand cranked pillar drill: When I turn the handle, the chuck spins as you would expect, but it doesn't go up and down, so how do you use it to drill a hole? Or is there a setting I've missed? It's only marked as "British Made".

    Red Knob and Tote

I would think the red paint has been put on by a user, you can still see some of the original dark varnish underneath the red paint. I don't think I've ever seen a painted wooden handle on a Bailey type plane. Edit: cross posted with AndyT!

Apologies for my comment. I'm looking forwards to new info on the site.

    Mango Wood

I suppose it's similar to rubber wood, when the tree doesn't produce any more rubber or mangoes it gets used as timber, locally, to make consumer products. The timber itself is not exported. As already said, the best source is probably unwanted furniture made from mango wood. You'd prob want...

    How many chisels and gouges?

I love all the different handles! I don't have a permanent working area, so no racks. I put them in boxes and tool rolls. Here's a leather roll and canvas roll next to a 5 1/2 plane, the canvas roll has 20 of the smaller carving tools and the leather roll has 11 of the medium and bigger gouges...

Turner, Naylor & Co "Northern" Grooving Plane

That site seems nothing more than a click-through site for Ebay. To quote from the 1938 catalogue itself: http://www.wkfinetools.com/hUK/TurnerNa ... rCo-01.asp says they closed in the early 1960s. I've never heard of the "Northern" brand until now and I thought why would they use it when...

    New Safety Boots: Your recommendations

Aldi have them at the moment at £15, and a couple of weeks ago Lidl had some also at the same price.

    Teensy chisel

The narrowest manufactured chisel I've got is 2.2mm, I think. I've got quite a few at 3mm and 3.5mm. Eg: My narrowest are ones I made myself, 1.5mm from ground flat stock and 1mm from a jigsaw blade. And I do use them, eg for making thumb planes, mortices for linings on a violin.

    Moseley chisel trademark?

I found this pic of a W. Marples gouge with a crown logo. That could be a mid 19th C or older tool, possibly before W. Marples became W. Marples & Sons.

Short doumentary on Oriental woodworking philosophy

I had to swith off, couldn't take any more waffle from someone who's emigrated to the US. Have a look at these vids on temple building in China using traditional methods, no English commentry though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HFZEwn ... NV0I3Lj9My

    Wooden clamp

I won a couple of those on Ebay for 99p, plus some other stuff but the seller didn't want to sell. I gather they're called "hand screws".

    Richard Maguire workbench

The op wasn't that clear to me, I thought "couldn't manage the weight any more" meant moving a workbench rather than building a new one. From http://www.rm-workbenches.co.uk/html/th ... enches.htm: which I think will involve some lifting of at least the bench top, which could weigh several...

British Furniture and Joinery courses you'd recommend.

For courses that lead to an actual qualification like those in the quote, I'd think you would have to look at universities and colleges instead of the private courses linked to in the previous replies. For example, London Metropolitan University offer degree courses in furniture...

    Straightening saws

Still off-topic (sorry but this really annoys me!) that company is trying to claim copyright on out of copyright books! From their FAQ: So I urge everyone not to visit the site, and not to use it any further, even if it's just to browse titles!

20% off over £20 on ebay if using Paypal until midnight 15/6

It was working from about 8pm to 10pm. I was ready to buy at about 10:15pm but then the code stopped working. I'm not that bothered about missing out saving a few pounds but it's just the waste of time doing all the stuff you need to do only to find right at the end there's no discount. It's...
